An international team of researchers has isolated five genes that are more active in young people with severe COVID-19 symptoms than in those with less severe symptoms. In their paper published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, the group describes their genetic analysis of young infected people with no known contributing factors for the disease.

DALLAS, Nov. 1, 2021 — Scientific research was sharply curtailed across the globe when the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020, restricting access to laboratories, shuttering core facilities and ceasing many clinical trials. Volunteer leaders and experts with the American Heart Association describe the ripple-effect of the pandemic on current and future cardiovascular and stroke research in a new American Heart Association Presidential Advisory, “Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Cardiovascular Science: Anticipating Problems and Potential Solutions,” published today in the Association’s flagship journal Circulation. Further, they urge targeted support for early career investigators, women and people from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in science; call for increased support and federal funding to ensure that the research enterprise can recover; and affirm the value of continued expansion of digital innovations that have changed and enhanced clinical trial design and conduct.
“Over the last 18 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen remarkable scientific successes in the face of tremendous challenge. However, research laboratories everywhere have faced daily impediments that began with laboratory shut downs, followed by the need to social distance, illness, supply chain limitations, and many other obstacles that have hit every phase and every type of research,” said Chair of the presidential advisory writing group Elizabeth M. McNally M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Council and professor and director of the Center for Genetic Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School Medicine in Chicago. “The pandemic has illustrated why science matters, and we must re-invest in the scientific infrastructure to rebuild science — so we are ready for the next challenges that come our way.”
Pandemic-related shelter-in-place orders in the U.S. and internationally resulted in nearly all research laboratories closing for several months in 2020. When laboratories re-opened, the return was far from normal operations with the need to work in limited shifts in order to reduce on-site personnel. Additionally, clinical studies and trials were halted to protect patient safety. Supply chains for research materials and equipment remain disrupted, and impediments to hiring research staff combined with modified or restricted training and education have hindered clinicians and scientists. Funding sources have not been available to address the costs required to re-establish research programs impacted by these challenges.

In the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, when so many lives have been lost to the virus, celebrating a “day of the dead” might seem strange, even tactless. But despite the morbid associations of its name, the Day of the Dead is actually a time to be reminded of the beauty of life, rather than just the inevitability of death.
Part of an important season for most Christians that begins at the end of October, the day sits within the celebration of Allhallowtide. This three-day period comprises All Hallows’ Eve on October 31, All Saints’ Day on November 1, and All Souls’ Day on November 2.
The last one is particularly important for Catholics and is an official holiday in their ecclesiastic calendar. Also known as the Commemoration of the Dearly Departed and the Day of the Dead, All Souls’ Day is generally a day of remembrance, when prayers are said for the souls of those who have passed on.
Around the world, All Souls often involves visiting cemeteries where loved ones are buried, and tending to their graves. Attending a mass or church service, praying and eating particular foods are all part of these observations.

Bangladesh on Monday began COVID-19 vaccination for schoolchildren aged 12 to 17 years in the capital Dhaka for the first time.
Education Minister Dipu Moni and Health Minister Zahid Maleque jointly inaugurated the campaign at a school in the business hub of Motijheel.
In the first phase, the immunization drive was launched simultaneously at eight school campuses.
Students and parents have expressed satisfaction over the move, hoping the campaign will ensure the health safety of millions of students in the country of nearly 170 million people.
Nearly 20 million people live in the capital Dhaka, making the megacity one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
“I feel safe after taking the first dose as every day I have to travel in crowded public transport,” Mohammad Sad, a student of Motijheel Ideal School and College, told Anadolu Agency.
Welcoming the drive, Lamia Anzum, another student, said more vaccination centers should be set up to cover all students. “I am happy now. But I want to see all students vaccinated within a short time and it should not be just as an experiment.”
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Mohammad Sogir Hossain, father of a student in capital Dhaka’s Jatrabari area, said the vaccination drive for all students across the country should be completed by December.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - European electronic COVID-19 vaccine certificates are put up for sale on the darknet, with an average price of $300, Russia's leading cybersecurity and anti-virus company Kaspersky Lab said on Monday.
"Kaspersky Lab has studied several shadow sites and found offers for the sale of electronic COVID-19 vaccine certificates of the European type. The document in the ads is offered for an average of $300," the company said in a statement.
Experts believe that the ads are mainly aimed at luring money from users, the statement said, adding that offers indicate payment is accepted in any cryptocurrency.
The certificates are offered both in English and Russian and users can choose the country of vaccination and the vaccine manufacturer— AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson or Moderna. The certificate is allegedly issued in one of the countries of Eastern Europe and may be verified using official applications such as CovPass, CovidCheck, Corona-Warn.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Sunday that she had tested positive for COVID-19, days after pulling out of the president's overseas trip due to a family emergency. Psaki is vaccinated, and said she is only experiencing mild symptoms.
Psaki said in a statement on Sunday that emergency was "members of my household testing positive for COVID-19."
"Since then, I have quarantined and tested negative (via PCR) for COVID on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday," Psaki said. "However, today, I tested positive for COVID. While I have not had close contact in person with the president or senior members of the White House staff since Wednesday — and tested negative for four days after that last contact — I am disclosing today's positive test out of an abundance of transparency. I last saw the president on Tuesday, when we sat outside more than six feet apart, and wore masks."
