Death toll hits 40, first cases confirmed in Europe

Thanks for the update RFS.

775 people died during global SARS outbreak and 8,000 people became ill.

This current coronavirus has spread to 10 countries and is moving faster than SARS did in the first 3 weeks.  SARS had spread to 29 countries.  It took almost four months for SARS to spread to 1,000 people. The Wuhan coronavirus has infected more than 1,200 people in just 25 days however the virus is not as deadly as SARS was with a fatality rate of 9.6%

sars killed 800.

the flu kills 400000 every year.

"One person who's been infected can suddenly infect 10, 20, 30 people," chief medical officer at Healix International (Healix) said of the coronavirus. "So this is what makes it much more contagious and much more of a problem." SARS didn't kill as many people but it didn't reach as many people as this thing will.  The flu by comparison is not as transmittable as SARS or this current coronavirus and the only reason either of these will likely not kill more than the flu is because of containment efforts.

That took SARS a year. Give this one some time. It’s only been a couple weeks

i don't know. sars was handled very poorly.  i think they are more on top of this one.

it's been over a month since scientists identified this virus.  first symptoms were recorded december 8th. the seafood market at the centre of the outbreak was closed on january 1st.

scientists are on it:

Cepi, which is funded by several countries and philanthropic donors, was set up three years ago in the wake of the Ebola epidemic, which killed 11,000 people. Despite an Ebola vaccine (later shown to be almost 100% effective) having been in development for a decade, it was not deployed until more than a year into the epidemic.

This time the aim is to have a viable vaccine in production within as little as 16 weeks – although testing for safety and efficacy will take longer.

One advantage is that the new coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, belongs to the same family as the severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars), for which a vaccine was developed following the 2002 outbreak. “Certainly that information will give us a head start,” said Prof Brendan Wren, dean of the faculty of infectious and tropical diseases at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

It is not clear how lethal the new coronavirus is or even whether it is as dangerous as the ordinary flu, which kills tens of thousands of people every year in the U.S. alone.

From what I am reading deaths from coronavirus are 2% for those infected compared to 10% for SARS, although spreading faster. Furthermore the cases resulting in deaths are from people who of the older generation and have weaken immune systems from existing illness.

No stats on how many have already recovered that never reported getting sick.

stats are compiled from cases outside of China as well, although the sample size is much smaller.

Oils stocks, airiness, healthcare, etc selling off in the panic ... will be watching to deploy the cash reserve when the fear starts to subside.

Perhaps this post should be in the investing section?

Given that scaring the pants off people is extremely profitable for the media, I suspect that you are right as weak hands take money off of the table.

supplies of what?

Ammunition, water, food. The necessities of life basically. It's probably nothing. China routinely quarantines 59 million people in 8 large cities over minor illnesses. Do not panic.

I guess they have to quarantine millions of people at a time, as they have over 1.5 billion people. It’s like if we quarantined Winnipeg.

Would we quarantine Winnipeg over nothing? By next month we should have about 1 million infected with 25000 dead but so far it's actually spreading a little faster than projected.

China has to show it takes global trade and global relations seriously, so they’ve quarantined the area.

It’s also good training for the military.

And no, we won’t see 25,000 dead by February. Let’s not get too excited.

so it’s much less lethal than the flu. cool.

by next month over 5 million Americans alone will have had the flu in 2020.
