since we changed to gateless parkades, it’s more like a parking lot… we will have an idea of how many vehicles are on the lot at a given time (eventually) but not how many are residents of downtown…. How would we ever know that? Likely a discussion to have but not in this forum..

No no, I’m talking about on-street parking.

Has there been an increase in vehicles parking in the last hour and a half of each day fully paid up to 6PM, presumably intending to remain parked beyond 6PM? I’m not referring to parkades.

I’m trying to understand if there is growing demand for on-street parking by residents and their visitors.

And the parkade question should be pretty easy. If vehicles are parked overnight, that usually correlates with someone residing or staying in the downtown core overnight. We may not get exact data but we can make inferences.

You data can’t tell what time people pay for parking?

I’m just trying to square the decoupling of parking stalls in the downtown has just pushed people onto street parking near their buildings.

How would your last-hour pay parking data differentiate overnight parkers from those entering town for dinner though? Their pay pattern would be identical.

Mike from 6 pm to 9am people don’t pay.. how do you figure it out? Many people pay from 5pm to 6pm but that doesn’t make them residents finding parking.. so no there is no data for that.. laments take this discussion offline so I can explain to you a few things.. you might have to take your shoes and socks off for it…The only way to do that is by physical counts but there are many reason cars are parked on the street at various hours.. a car at 3am doesn’t mean it’s a resident…

A car at 3am means you’ll need to take this offline and explain the birds and bees to Mike.

Because it would be at a higher rate than it has traditionally been.

I can’t make it and easier, you guys.

Has the rate of people paying for on-street parking between 4:30-6PM through to the 6PM cut-off increased, or decreased, or has it stayed the same to years prior?

Holy smokes…

I could dig into that but that information really doesn't tell us much.  What you need is a count of cars at 2am if you are looking for residents, not payments...  Sorry i know you think that's an easy way to get your answer but it is not.

After going to the grocery store a lot of people are suddenly motivated to cut back on all their other spending.

My doctor is always telling me to lose weight, but now I guess I will be forced to eat less due to the high price of food.

only thing is, the prices of vegetables and fruit are going up higher than most other things.  eating healthy is costing more.

Mike, you are now assigned to go downtown and count cars at 2 AM.

Please have your report ready by noon tomorrow.

A bag of Great Value potato chips can still be had for $1.

But still dragging is the return to office work, which has a massive effect on the health of downtown restaurants and retail operations.

The return to work has been estimated at about 28 per cent based on 12 key downtown buildings, which may account for the overall pedestrian numbers hitting 9.63 million last year, about the same as 2020, but well off the 17.5 million counted in 2019.

^ If everything is so peachy, why is council providing grants every couple of weeks to help fund all of the businesses and activities they say are tanking?!

Thank you to the BCRFA, ABLE BC and other business lobby groups for persuading the province to change the way we calculate paid sick days. Prior to the change it was possible for employees, depending on hire date, to claim 10 days in the first year.

The press release doesn’t mention that, of course.

^ You sure about that Matt. I read it as though they are switching from employment year to calendar year which would mean that someone could start in Nov and then take 5 days in Dec and 5 days in Jan. Am I missing something?
