Saanich workers vote for strike action if agreement isn't reached

Workers for the District of Saanich have voted in favour of a strike mandate, putting job action on the table if negotiations for a new collective agreement are unsuccessful.

CUPE 2011, which represents Saanich municipal workers, said the vote was called after the union and employer reached an impasse.

The union said the offer on the table does not address cost-of-living challenges facing workers, who want improved benefits, safety equipment allowances and support for casual workers. The parties have been in negotiations since December.

Workers voted 94 per cent in favour of striking.

Apparently Canada subscribes to different science than the rest of the world. This is from one of the Celebrity Cruises Facebook pages I follow:

Beginning with departures on September 5, 2022: All travelers, regardless of vaccination status, can cruise with us on sailings departing from U.S. and Europe ports (excluding sailings that visit CANADA). Testing protocols will ease on our U.S. and Europe sailings. We will begin accepting self-tests on sailings from U.S. ports that don’t visit CANADA...

Over half of Canadians say they can't keep pace with the current cost of living, according to a survey released Monday by the Angus Reid Institute.

The polling firm surveyed 2,279 Canadian adults who are members of the Angus Reid Forum from Aug. 8-10 and found that 56 per cent of them are struggling to keep up as high inflation and interest rates force them to tighten their belts.

"In the heart of the pandemic, BC Ferries put approximately 150 unvaccinated people on unpaid leave. Now with the federal vaccine mandate lifted, it’s giving those employees a choice.

"Now there's an opportunity for those folks to come back to work, which we’re hoping will provide some relief for the shortage of workers we have," said Eric McNeely, provincial president of the BC Ferry and Marine Workers Union."

This doesn't mention those that just left.

It's one way to change loyalties. To abandon your employees when they are being forced to choose - have their bodies violated or keep their job. Then when they need them back say "we will give you back your job, for now".... Many had enough time and the need to work other things out.

It's like my friend who went back to work at his previous job. Didn't take his old position back in management. He told them he just didn't care about the company anymore after the way they treated him....

Meanwhile BC Ferries is having record travellers.

And bars are full of students.

And we’re told everyone “deserves” a tip.

There are consequences to these things.

Know it all.

I imagine now that the precedent is set more employers will put employees on "unpaid leave" instead of firing them. Easier and less expensive and the union doesn't mind!

After the first weekend of job action and liquor rationing that left some customers disgruntled, there was no sign negotiations would resume between the B.C. Government Employees Union and the province.

Early Monday, the union declared a non-emergency ban on overtime for members. The overtime ban excludes members of the B.C. Wildfire Service, according to a BCGEU news release.

“B.C.’s public service has been reliant on our members’ overtime for far too long and dealing with the systemic issues behind that reliance is part of what we’re trying to achieve in this round of bargaining,” said Stephanie Smith, BCGEU president and chair of the union’s public service bargaining committee, in a statement Monday.

“In this job action our members are the vanguard of the broader public sector in our province. We hope this escalation gives government the incentive they need to invite us back to the bargaining table and negotiate a deal that will ensure robust, sustainable public services for our province.”

A day earlier, B.C. Finance Ministry officials said it was “status quo” on the negotiating front — and no change to rationing limits at government liquor stores.

The BCGEU negotiating team rejected the Public Service Agency’s most recent 10.99 per cent wage hike over three years. The last formal negotiating meeting was on July 4.

Maybe they should install a tip option on their POS, share it amongst all the members.
