The hit to the economy is from the pandemic, not the pandemic response. Countries with strong responses are actually doing better with economic recovery. For example, Sweden's economy has been hit harder than the rest of the Nordic countries, because of their weak response.

It is isn't a battle between protecting people and protecting the economy. Keeping the pandemic under control is the best protection for both people and the economy.

Excuse me, but how can you 100% avoid it if your job requires you to unlock yourself from your home and you can't afford to lock yourself inside otherwise?

i covered that above.  quit your god damned job.  just like the government has "quit" the job of millions of Canadians for them.

get a different job or go on CERB/unemployment/welfare and be homeless and/or sell your house and car and possessions or get a loan or move in with family.  just like the government is on the verge of making millions of people do.  you are not so f&^%ing special that we should be required tip-toe around you to save you from the virus.

Any service based economy was going to get hit hard during this pandemic. There was no avoiding it.

Right, everyone else are the one's thinking they aren't so f&^%ing special...

Point taken, VW. There’s truth to that, from that angle.

Hotel workers are fasting on the lawn of the legislature to bring attention to the mass layoffs their industry has seen and to lobby the government for priority for an eventual return to work.

Bring attention to? Everyone knows hotels would be hard hit because there is no tourism during a pandemic! Without tourism how is a hotel going to survive? Business travel? Businesses have been axing business travel in favour of zoom calls.

When you’re unemployed because of actions your government has taken, you do whatever you can to maintain your composure and sense of purpose, and this group is hoping that the government implements measures to require employers to give former employees the first opportunity to get their jobs back.

I'm sorry, but the hotel workers that are unemployed are not unemployed because of the actions of the government.

That said, I can get down with measures requiring the laid-off employees having a right of first refusal when those jobs do come back.

Our hotels (and tourism in general) are suffering more from the lack of leadership in the US than they are from steps taken by BC.

^^Of course they are. It wasn’t Hilton that restricted travel.

And it’s not just hotel workers, it’s all tourism workers.

No one wants to stay in a hotel in an area where a pandemic is running unchecked.

Business is only going to return to normal when the pandemic is under control. I can't believe there are people who find that to be a controversial statement.

It’s controversial because the definition of “under control” has shifted.

Remember when our goal for stability was flattening the curve? We flattened it. Then authorities said that’s not enough any more. We must eradicate it.

Lol. There are only a handful of countries that don't have entry restrictions & most of them require entrants to isolate for 14 days. The rest aren't popular tourist destinations pre-covid...

i agree.  but that's not a reason to close stuff.  "oh well, weddings were going to be down anyway this year, so let's ban them".

The goal was to flatten it and keep it flattened. Always was.

the goal was to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed.  we've far exceeded that goal.  but we still have restrictions.
