Good news for pubs and restaurants today. Province has announced that they'll be opening up a free expedited application process to increase the licensed service area (but not capacity). Businesses holding food-primary, liquor-primary, and manufacturer licenses will be eligible. Patio season is almost upon us!

Why not use the bike lanes for patios?

Beagle - open short hours today (confirmed), regular hours starting tomorrow (as per a staff member), with considerably less seating than before.

Anywhere else?

Wife and I met friends at Yates Street Taphouse for late afternoon drink. Had a great time, safe, clean and great service.

Had dinner and   on the patio of the Surly Mermaid in Sidney this evening. Bit chilly but worth it. Patio on!

Got an email from Irish Times / Penny Farthing - reopening tomorrow with reduced capacity and lots of extra cleaning.

Tip your servers, their side work just increased exponentially.

Yes, at dinner yesterday we left the usual percentage on the credit card slip and cash on the table as extra.

Every person I do business with I thank them for being there.

The 10 Acres restaurant group is very excited to announce the re-opening of dine-in service at our two downtown restaurants, “10 Acres Bistro” & “The Commons.” We will be opening Thursday, May 28th, at 5 pm.

It has been a long and, at times, challenging, last few months for many of our team members, family, friends, guests, and neighbors. We are incredibly thankful to be able to send out this announcement today.

We are very excited about being able to open up our doors again to the community. Those of us in hospitality, choose this industry because of our love of connections. Helping to facilitate the experience of bringing people together is a large part of why our team chooses this profession. There are going to be some rules and limitations in place, which will allow us to be able to return to doing what we love.

Our menus, in the beginning, will be limited, as will our staffing levels. We are doing this purposefully, methodically and carefully to ensure our team members have space to work, and ensuring we can abide by the social distancing & health guidelines set out by Dr. Henry, and the relevant health authorities.

We ask for your patience and understanding as we all adjust together to this new normal. We all want to enjoy the vibrancy and excitement that comes with dining in restaurants while doing so in a way that keeps both our staff and guests safe.

Some of the new health & safety rules that need to be followed:

-No more than six people per table
-Our restaurants will be operating at 50% capacity
-Social distancing guidelines from other guests and staff are to be followed at all times
-If you are or have been sick and/or if you have been out of Canada in the last 14 days, we please ask that you join us at a later date.
-Service styles will be adjusted to meet safety guidelines. Please follow the directions of our staff as they are doing their best to ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience while remaining safe

We do ask that anyone uncomfortable being in a restaurant, following our rules, or is looking for a service style matching what was in place before the pandemic, not to join us at this time. We would happily welcome you back at a later date. In order to keep other guests and our staff safe, 10 Acres reserves the right to refuse service to anyone whom we believe to be uninterested in abiding by our safety protocols.

Thank you to everyone for your incredible support and understanding over the last few months, and as we move forward into our “new normal.” Your messages, calls, and online orders have not gone unnoticed, and we are incredibly grateful to be in a position to welcome everyone back into our restaurants.

that's all pretty wordy.

you are opening a restaurant not a nuclear research facility.

i'm just laughing a bit at the 14-paragraph explanation.  meanwhile other places just opened last week.

plus this seemed a bit snooty:

I think that's a real issue that many restaurants are facing.

They are just asking people to more or less not be a jerk and to listen to staff. Not difficult.

i think we might see some very bitter restaurant owners this summer.  and i don't blame them.  even when running at "full" capacity (50% occupancy) they are going to be losing money.   that hurts.

Have you been to those other places? Because all the ones I've been to had similar statements posted for you to read. The main message can pretty much be distilled down to "don't be a jerk", which admittedly may be off-putting for some people.
