215 graves at Kamloops residential school | Discussion, news, and what we know so far

I’m sure children died but that wasn’t the role of these schools.
The physical genocide was the diseased blankets, killing their way of life (buffalo genocide), alcohol, the sexual sterilization act.
So I do see this one event as misdirection.
It’s either denial or white guilt. I reject both as they are both not the way.

Yes, all of that is true. Some kids may have welcomed the move.
But this was all mishandled. It became a conversation about genocide because some forces pushed it that way, and the obliging media went along with it. Now we have a credibility situation.
How many times have we seen this in the past? A legitimate social issue is hijacked by opportunists and radicals who pressure the majority to be silent.

But this #215 issue does open a wound in our country that people didn’t like to talk about.
Hopefully, as a result of more conversations, we really/truly move towards sincere reconciliation and shed the agents of manipulation along the way.

Nobody kept at the very least a rudimentary list of the 2,000 kids missing? Not a single record among the tribe?
This is a clown show.

A spokesperson for Poilievre said his appearance at the FCPP doesn't mean he endorses "the views of everyone who has ever worked for the group."
"Mr. Poilievre clearly does not agree with the opinions you've pointed out. We condemn all forms of racism and bigotry," his spokesperson said, adding that CBC faced its own accusations of systemic racism from one of its unions in 2020.

Buried deep in the CBC piece is this:
“Buried deep”?
It’s halfway through an article that’s not particularly long.

- https://www.cmg.ca/e...mic-racism/amp/The journalistic failures in the CBC’s coverage of this historic moment are the direct result of whose voices and experiences drive decision-making at the CBC. The problem lies with white editors who dismiss pitches from non-white journalists as ‘biased’ or ‘unimportant’ because they might not appeal to a white audience. It’s with white managers who treat their POC subordinates as adversarial by default, leading them to feel that in order to succeed at the CBC, they must leave their humanity at the door. It’s in the countless unacceptable comments about appearances, accents and culture. It’s in the way that BIPOC are disproportionately targeted for perceived violations of the JSP. It’s the JSP itself, which requires employees to adopt a white, middle-class worldview in order to be considered “objective.”

Liberal governments certainly get full value for the $Billion+ they give to the CBC every year.
The CBC received more than $1.2 billion from taxpayers in 2021. Since the beginning of 2015, the CBC’s annual funding from taxpayers has increased by more than $203 million, or 20 per cent, according to its annual reports.

"I know the catch phrase out there is reconciliation," Skead said. "In order to get to reconciliation, we need the truth. And we need sustained funding to get to that truth.
"There's a lot of work that has been done to date, and still a lot of work forthcoming, not only utilizing that technology, but also the mental health supports that we're going to require as a nation, as Anishinaabe people," he said. "We need that funding, we need that accountability and we need those commitments from Canada, and the province.

Something about this story doesn’t add up. Will be interesting to hear the outcome of exhumation and forensic work. If it’s what they claim it is, truly shocking and sickening.
Perhaps this year?

This is an interesting case because the official story has been revised - it’s no longer “215 confirmed graves, some as young as 4 years old.”
But media has not reverted the narrative back toward the truth. Go to any coffee shop and the chatter is still the original false narrative.
We’re marching toward a gulag archipelago with all these untruths established as dogma.

What is the truth, though? That these graveyards didn't lose their grave markings, and were never graveyards?

Ottawa, plaintiffs agree to settle 'Indian boarding homes' class action
Lawyer estimates deal could be worth $2.2 billion
Brett Forester · CBC News · Posted: Jan 03, 2023 2:24 PM PST | Last Updated: January 3
The Canadian government and lawyers for survivors have reached an agreement-in-principle to settle a class-action lawsuit over the operation of boarding homes for Indigenous students attending public schools between 1951 and 1992.
The federally run program saw an estimated 40,000 Indigenous youth placed in non-Indigenous boarding homes where they suffered cultural destruction and abuse, the parties said in a Tuesday news release.
The seven-page agreement was signed last month and lays the groundwork for the parties to reach a comprehensive final deal, which will have no cap on compensation and could see more than $2 billion paid out.

EXCLUSIVE: Man at centre of residential school controversy says criticism of Poilievre is 'reckless and unfair'
By Matthew Horwood Jan 21, 2023
After Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was criticized for giving a speech to Winnipeg think tank that has platformed writers who downplayed the negative effects of residential schools, the man at the centre of the controversy is criticizing politicians and the media for their "dogma."
"To criticize Mr. Poilievre for expressing his views through a think tank, which has charitable status and publishes a variety of opinions on important matters, is both reckless and unfair," said Mark DeWolf, a Frontier Centre for Public Policy (FCPP) research associate and author of the controversial article.
"I long for the day when a reasoned and respectful debate can take place on such issues as the actual impact of residential schooling on our indigenous population."
Last Friday, Poilievre (Carleton, ON) gave a speech to the think tank as part of a daylong visit to Winnipeg, MB. But he was criticized by several politicians, including Minister of Crown-Indigenous relations Marc Miller (Ville-Marie-Le Sud-Ouest-Île-des-Sœurs, QC), and Minister of Northern Affairs Dan Vandal (St. Boniface, MB).

More residential school records needed to answer ‘hard questions’: special interlocutor
By Brenna Owen The Canadian Press
Posted January 17, 2023 5:47 pm
The fight is not over to find records that could answer “hard questions” about unmarked graves at Canada’s residential schools. including who the missing children were and how they died, said the woman appointed to work with Indigenous communities in searches underway across the country.
The Canadian government and the religious groups that signed the 2006 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement following a landmark class-action lawsuit were required to provide their records to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, but many are still missing, special interlocutor Kimberly Murray said.
While most of those documents are held by Catholic entities, Murray said she has personal experience finding additional records that hadn’t been shared after Anglican officials in Canada indicated everything had been turned over

$2.8-billion settlement reached in class-action lawsuit over residential schools
Suit was filed in 2012 over destruction of language and culture caused by residential school system
CBC News ·
Posted: Jan 21, 2023 9:27 AM PST | Last Updated: January 21
Officials announced Saturday that the federal government and 325 First Nations have agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit, seeking reparations for the loss of language and culture brought on by Indian residential schools, for $2.8 billion.
The agreement still has to be approved by a Federal Court before it can be disbursed to recipients, who filed the claim for collective compensation in 2012 as part of a broader class action known as the Gottfriedson case.
Canada agreed to pay the $2.8 billion of settlement money into a new trust fund that will operate for 20 years, if the court approves the deal. The fund will be run independent of the federal government, according to officials.
The fund organization will be governed by a board of nine Indigenous directors, of whom Canada will choose one, the agreement says.
