Canada Day will possibly cancelled this year?

The City Family – the City’s reconciliation “advisory body” – participated at the formal invitation of the Songhees Nation, which gave us an opportunity to check in informally with City Family members about this year’s Canada Day celebration given the information we’d received on Friday.

RECOMMENDATONS
1. That Council direct staff to put on hold plans for the conventional Canada Day celebration this year

i thought it had already been cancelled due to COVID anyway?  it was going to look no different than victoria day this year.

oh hold on.  but the excerpt above does say "the conventional canada day celebration".

Instead, she said, the city is looking for other ways to mark the country’s birthday. “It’s more important now than ever, as we are coming together daily as a community and a country to support each other, that we take the time to reflect on and celebrate what it means to be Canadians,” she said.

Helps said she has written federal Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault asking about a “virtual national celebration” and how B.C.’s capital city could assist with such an event.

More broadly, Helps said, she’s asked staff to investigate how the city might be able to help people come together in other ways this summer.

As usual, the Mayor and Alto have forgotten that google exists. There WERE activities planned for July 1st and a budget of $65,000 set aside. I am sure that the money will still be given away to their buddies in any event.

Note that Alto is the co-signer of Helps’ motion.

Helps is likely going up be campaigning for Alto’s mayoral run next year. Alto hasn’t announced but the writing is on the wall.

Uugghhh Alto is so past her 'sell by' date. She's becoming more woke every week. The last thing this City needs is more of the same experimental ideology

Alto has always been progressive, what separated her from Helps was that she was also pragmatic.

If Alto intends to run she is simply playing to the audience.

Victoria is cancelling its Canada Day broadcast, instead planning to work with the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations to create an alternative event at a later date, amid calls nationwide to cancel July 1 celebrations.

Councillors voted unanimously to cancel a planned one-hour Canada Day broadcast after long-standing Lekwungen participants told city staff last week they would not take part this year in light of the discovery of an unmarked grave at a former Kamloops residential school.

Helps stressed that while the city is no longer planning a virtual Canada Day event, residents can still hold their own celebrations.

“Neighbours can still gather in COVID -riendly block parties, put out Canadian flags. People in Victoria and across the country can obviously do whatever they want on July the 1st,” she said.

thanks for your permission.

I am glad that Helps is allowing us to celebrate Canada Day on our own. Mighty big of her.

Well at least some performers will get $65K for doing nothing. If they spend it locally then it may boost our GDP by .0000001%

Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole said today he's troubled by the cancellation of Canada Day celebrations in some municipalities and accused "a small group of activist voices" of continually talking down the country rather than acknowledging its many successes.

In a speech at the final Conservative caucus meeting before the House of Commons goes on its summer break, O'Toole said that while Canada's history is littered with injustice and wrongdoing, that doesn't justify cancelling the nation's birthday — a time to give thanks for "living in the greatest country in the world."

"We are not a perfect country. No country is. There is no place on this planet whose history can withstand close scrutiny. But there is a difference between acknowledging where we've fallen short and always tearing the country down."

The CBC misquoted him.

His actual quote says "...But there is a difference between acknowledging where we've fallen short. There is a difference between legitimate criticism, and always tearing down the country."

For most people and businesses, the last 18 months have been the most lucrative of any period in their lifetime. Hundreds of thousands of teenagers and millions of workers have made $30K+ on the CERB/CRB, investments have returned 25%+, businesses have racked in millions in the CEWS and grants, and businesses that have been able to adapt have increased their revenue and market share on top of what they have been able to sponge from the various levels of Government. In total $1.2T of printed money has been transferred into the pockets of Canadians (and insiders and buddies of politicians as well but I digress).

All of that and yet someone we have a group that hates their country, hates themselves and is always looking at ways to undermine everyone else.

If that is the way these people feel during the most lucrative year in our history, I can only imagine how they are going to react in another year or two when all of that disappears and we experience the opposite.

The Songhees Nation has asked Victoria council to drop their sombre Canada Day plans and pursue an event more in-keeping with what Victorians have come to expect, fireworks and all.

Council has backed down on its plans for a near non-event.

^ At least they have developed some common sense. Too bad they didn't come to that conclusion before they supported the plans to cancel Canada Day. Could have saved themselves and their members a lot of grief.

Next step is to 'ask' council to drop the plans for a reconciliation levy.

Well that must have been awkward for Council to hear.

I don't get that from the TC article today. It sounds like they want to get money and then decide what to do. I note that Chief Sam doesn't refute the comment that he is calling the shots on Canada day! Although it sounds like I was 100% correct in that the reason they are suddenly open to change is because of backlash.

I am sure staff are happy to get to work all weekend to crank out an application (due Sunday evening) that should have been prepared well in advance.

I don't read it that way.  From what is written in the TC, it sounds like they want the money for fireworks but we will need to wait and see if there is any intent to use it for it's stated purpose.

Colwood or Langford should put in a competing application.  At least their Canada Day would be all inclusive.

It feels like they’re hedging their bets at this point. Fireworks might not happen because of the delay in applying, so with or without fireworks has been the talking point.

i really didn't get the whole point of cancelling Canada day (or trying to cancel it) when they could have just used it as a time to make it more inclusive and embrace all that Canada has to offer..have a well rounded Canada day instead of a one sided Canada day isn't that the whole point of reconciliation? everyone having representation  and all taking part in a positive event

For some, the point of reconciliation is punishment. Just ask Lisa Helps.
