Helps was interviewed the other day on the CBC.
Q: Will the public be able to provide input into the Canada day activities.
A. No. There is not enough time.

Stephen, will you speak up on this and suggest to the Mayor that public input is a function of a democratic process or are going to support a railroading of her ego-centric plans?

Most people just want the fireworks. The rest is just spending good money after bad for programming and performances nobody is really interested in. Back in the day they had some bigger name performers, now it's just trash that people would never pay to see.

You’re on point there.
The problem is that City Council are not arts, culture, entertainment, or event experts. Why would they have any idea what's popular and will draw a crowd? Yet they are setting the agenda for this day.
Then they will hire a logistics/event management company that quite frankly gets a fixed price for the contract regardless of crowd size and also can save money (more profit for them) if they have lower crowds.

Canada Day celebrations took place without so much fuss for decades. Can we please just go back to how things used to happen?

That is exactly what they are doing although it will probably just be someone's buddy that gets the gig.

The problem is that the person who really cared about the event and who tried to make something inclusive (ie CTH) resigned out of protest. Instead we are left with Helps driving the bus and she is intent on making the event as divisive and polarizing as possible - basically a FU Victoria as we heads out the door.

If we assume that the legislative lawn is not available........protests???
What other events or activities other than fireworks would people like to happen?

Very few rational people will protest at an event site and spoil it. It's only the small amount of radicals that do that.

Have we ever had a protest (more than one person) at a Canada Day event? Helps has manufactured the issue in order to give herself an excuse for reducing the size and scope of the event.

A crowd tore down a statue last year. But nobody saw them since there have been no arrests.

There used to be a Canada flag thing that was - Oh I don't know - wildly popular.

Children's activities
Entertainment
Main stage(s) music, variety
Canada Flag
Food trucks
Street vendors
Helps' stated plan will include some of those things but they will be done in such a way to divide the community. If you listen to her interview she makes comments like street vendors selling ethnic crafts implying of course that colonialists won't be welcome. I also assume the entertainment will be only what she and her City family approve which is to hand off performance funds to her friends.

In 2016 we had Mother Mother at the legislature lawn.
Like I say, we will end up with some entertainment troupe(s) that's never had a paid-admission gig.
