CRABBEN IN THE PARK

screenshot-crabben.ca-2023.07.13-08_43_39.png

Where: Banfield Park, 521 Craigflower Rd.

When: Saturday, July 15, 2 p.m.

Admission: Free

Why: This first annual seafood-centric event is built around a wild Dungeness crab bucket ($65 from eventbrite.com) packed with hordes of other ingredients. The ocean-to-table Vic West event is licensed and features live music, with kids activities making it the perfect family-friendly feast. There’s also a fundraising element to Crabben in the Park, in support of the Vic West Community Association and Reciprocity Connects, which makes the eating all the more enjoyable.

^ Boy that sounds like fun.

There’s nothing like day drinking in the park on a Saturday afternoon.

You never know…you might get lucky and pass a half a bucket of Dungeness crab out through your nose before it’s time for supper.

Can’t have a family-friendly event without getting liquored!

No need to puff, just take a handful of gummies.

It’s like we don’t even hide the infantilization of adults any more. Child-like mannerisms, child-like slang, gummies to get high. Whatever it takes to make you not question what you’re doing with your life at 35…

Lots of judgemental posts here - jeezuz. Its a family friendly event , period, all stop. Tons of families in the area. We're going with some neighbors who have young kids and it'll be a blast no doubt. A side benefit is that it will be an excellent opportunity to get some exercise walking the new Pyrenees, all 140 pounds of him. Personally I'm going for the crab! To hell with gummies or alcohol.

How did this go from a post advertising what is a community event to snarky comments about pot use and gummies? Purely as an aside I would suggest if you can't go an entire day without booze or dope, particularly at a community-family event, you may have a problem.

So why infuse alcohol into a family event?

Domestic violence as a result of alcohol is a serious problem in our society. That you now see alcohol at a family event at a park is totally tone deaf. It’s completely unnecessary.

People don't go here to get drunk. C'mon. Be realistic.

Alcohol being served at family events catering to children is fundamentally unreasonable.

You can’t reason about something that shouldn’t even be happening in the first place. And look at where they plunked the “kids zone” and the booze tent. Right next to each other.

I mean, that's your opinion. I've heard other opinions today that this is even less family friendly because its effectively $74 bucks pp for the crab (never mind that you can probably easily get away with 2 buckets for a family instead of one per person). Anyways, I don't see a problem with alcohol here. Its not like alcohol and family targeted venues don't exist just fine all over the world. Disney serves alcohol.

People serve alcohol at home as well.

Bring some wet wipes, eating crab is messy.

Even the Moss St Paint In has a beer garden. I see no problem having a beer or whatever on a day outside in a family setting. It’s ok for the kids to see adults enjoying a drink, one might say normal.

It's FREE* (pay for crabs, optional*) and alcohol is optional, seems fine.

*CA$74.09  incl. CA$5.56 Fee / incl. CA$3.53 GST

Serves 1 and includes: 1 pound of fresh crab, corn, potatoes, Frys bread, and lemon coated in butter. It also comes all the tools needed to enjoy this summer feast (a crab cracker and seafood fork for you to keep)

This wasn’t a thing when we were growing up.

We have a problem with youth and addiction, so we not? So what do we do, we open up beer gardens at family events. We jump to defend pot gummies and talk about cannabis like it’s this amazing industry that solves all problems.

If the goal is to promote drugs in our kids faces, then we’re succeeding exceptionally.

Kids drank when we were growing up. They didn’t do at festivals or beer gardens or bars, nor do they now.

I don’t think 16 year olds are going to family picnics, though.

If we want to play the concerned citizen thing over drug overdoses and young kids using drugs, we have to take responsibility for the proliferation of alcohol in our communities, and now cannabis use that’s becoming as common as alcohol use.

20-some micro breweries downtown. Dozens of bars. Pot stores. Open drug use. Family picnic events with beer gardens.

This is not the way to a better society.

More video games might help. Is anyone on that?

When dad’s playing video games for hours a day, it’s hard to tell the 10 year old he should go outside and play with his friend.

When mom’s drinking wine at another family picnic event before the daily wine o’clock, it’s hard to tell a 10 year old going on 11, that alcohol isn’t a substance to take lightly.

Where are we going, with this concern over drugs and the harm they cause, if we’re pushing drugs up to kids noses, and defending it?

Mr. 'one puff is all you need' wants to go back to effectively prohibition.

For all of these things: moderation and education. The level of moderation is what has been a major contention point recently, with SJWs wanting no holds barred, vs the old school 'just say no' crowd etc. Cloudied by addiction issues, where really, if you're addicted to a substance, the 'moderation' level should probably be zero.
