What Is Matt Walsh Angling For?

 

Could the far-right media personality be aiming for elected office?

And at least from the outside, it looks like Matt Walsh has accomplished all he’s going to accomplish at the Daily Wire. He’s written books. He makes movies. He’s perhaps their best-known media personality who isn’t either a raging, obviously unhinged lunatic, or trying to clean up the platform's extremist viewpoints so that they’re palatable to a bigger audience on their way to greener pastures, or a has-been trying to remain at least a little relevant on their way down. Is he really going to hang around waiting to ... what? Age into Jordan Peterson?

 

If the Supreme Court rules Walsh's way in U.S. v. Skrmetti, which it likely will, then what? He’s won. Sure, he can continue to try to make trans people miserable, but that’s boring clean-up work that has the potential to make him look weak if he can’t accomplish it. He’s worked hard and achieved his goal. It doesn’t look like a win if you keep fighting, right?

 

Walsh is on an upward trajectory right now, but he needs someplace for all this momentum to carry him. Even if he wanted a mainstream news career, what channel can offer him an audience bigger than what he already has? He could continue to press his way into entertainment, but to what end? To have a Hollywood hit? The whole point of the Daily Wire’s push into entertainment is to provide an alternative to Hollywood that centers conservatives. If Walsh can make a Hollywood hit, it disproves the basic premise of the whole Daily Wire ethos.

Last year, Jeremy’s Razors made up the vast majority of the Daily Wire’s commerce revenue, according to Axios, accounting for $19 million of approximately $22 million in sales.

 

Murphy said the company shipped its millionth razor in September.

The Daily Wire is looking to possibly partner with a larger company or raise a significant round of capital next year to meet its growth ambitions, its co-CEO Jeremy Boreing told Axios.

 

Why it matters: The company's commercial success has caught the attention of investors and potential buyers looking to gain a foothold in the younger conservative culture.

• Semafor reported Sunday that Fox Corp. was eyeing potential acquisitions of conservative podcast companies, including Daily Wire.

Between the lines: Asked about a deal with Fox, Boreing said the company isn't actively looking for a buyer, but "we're not closed off to an offer."

• "It's easy to imagine a strategic partnership with Fox or someone like Fox, that could be mutually beneficial. I think that we complement Fox and don't compete with Fox," he added, noting Daily Wire's audience is primarily younger and more coastal urban.

By the numbers: The Nashville-based company, which is on track to surpass $200 million in revenue this year, would come with a hefty price tag.

• Daily Wire raised an undisclosed round of capital in 2023 at a valuation well north of $1 billion, a source told Axios.
• The firm was initially funded by Republican fracking billionaire Farris Wilks, but until its latest raise, it relied mostly on its profits to fuel its growth.

Zoom in: In addition to subscriptions, the firm makes money from advertising and e-commerce.

• Earlier this year, its star podcaster and co-founder Ben Shapiro testified on Capitol Hill as part of a broader fight to get ad agencies not to dismiss conservative media. Boreing said conversations with Fortune 500 advertisers have "opened up enormously" since.
• The company made more than $22 million on commerce sales in 2023. This year, it will make more than $20 million on its Jeremy's Razors business alone, Boreing said. Mayflower Cigars, its cigar startup, has grossed $4.2 million in sales since it launched last November.

The big picture: Like many modern media companies, The Daily Wire has started to pivot its focus away from social media and more toward its owned and operated channels.

Yes, sort of.

 

All the other hosts have their own channel, but they did not start that way, they were all under DW to start.

 

I do not know if they left DW if they could take the YT channel with them.  Candace Owens did (3.2M subscribers, but started well before she was with DW, in 2015).

Well, Jeremy said that for new young talent, yes.

 

I mean he is providing the platform (the subscription model) and all the technical help and studio and cross-promotion.

 

Cooper just got married too, so who knows.  Anway, she has almost 1500,000 subs to her new channel with zero videos yet so we shall see.

 

Boreing does not give these guys days off, even when they are on the road they almost always produce, even if from a hotel room.  That might not suit some.

A man was sentenced to five years in jail after prosecutors said he and his wife threw smoke bombs and a firework during a protest at the University of Pittsburgh in 2023, injuring several police officers. 

 

A judge sentenced 37-year-old Brian DiPippa to five years in prison and his wife, 42-year-old Krystal DiPippa, to three years of probation, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania announced on Monday. They must also pay $1,400 in restitution to Pitt and more than $47,000 to an officer who was injured.  

 

In April of 2023, about a hundred people were protesting a debate on transgender issues hosted by a conservative student group featuring political commentator Michael Knowles (Daily Wire).

 

During the protest, prosecutors said Brian DiPippa ignited and dropped two homemade incendiary smoke devices around a line of people waiting to get inside.
