About Starbucks
Starbucks opened its first store in 1971 close to the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle and has been delighting people ever since. It takes its logo from the mermaid and the name from the first mate ‘Starbuck’ in Merman Melville’s classic novel, Moby Dick. Inspired by Seattle coffee roasting entrepreneur, Alfred Peet, the founders of Starbucks modelled their fine coffee selections and roasting practices to start creating their own blends and flavors. In 1982, a young Howard Schultz joined the company and had an ‘epiphany’ while he visited espresso bars in Milan about a coffee house concept in downtown Seattle.
The rest as they say .... Is history.

Francis Mairet was the GM at the Marriott when it opened, glad to see he moved on.

Maybe a bad location for a couple of reasons:

  1. The much, much easier to access original Starbucks on the other side of Douglas Street took whatever Starbucks business might be present in the mall (mornings, you can literally park at their front door, or simply drive through).
  2. All the folks who work in the vicinity are heavy supporters of Java Jo's coffee shop in the Van City building, and (apparently) avoided Starbucks like the plague.

(as well as the original Starbucks on the east side of the Mayfair mall, which I presume is still there, and where in the morning you can literally park right at their front door to go get your java).

Really? I much preferred it when that location was a Serious Coffee.

Indeed, I hear it's far better now too.

I'm led to believe that there really is a "Jo" running the place, and that her dedication to her customers is top notch.

I believe she even hosts casual "special" events for folks like the local hot rod cruisers, who head there ... park ... and then go inside for a chin wag and a java.
