We're letting Ruskies play concerts here?

If they're anti-Putin Russkies, yes: https://www.youtube....h?v=ALS92big4TY

I'm curious to see the price of the tickets for this Rifflandia, not yet disclosed. Lorde and Charli XCX are global, arena-level acts, and won't come cheap. Also curious to see how quickly the passes sell out ... and then appear on scalper resale sites.

The Rick Mercer shows, Sunday May 22.

The 7pm show is sold out. But 10pm on a Sunday night is proving a tougher sell with that crowd. Still about 70% of tickets available.

Tickets roughly $70 to $90.

She wrote a book about being profoundly depressed for years.
Depression and suicide are a chronic, tragic, and all too frequent occurrence.

Her daughter has now publicly stated that she shot herself in the head.

Jacob Hoggard, the frontman for the Canadian band Hedley, was convicted Sunday of sexual assault causing bodily harm to an Ottawa woman but acquitted of the same charge involving a teenage fan.

Hoggard, 37, was also found not guilty of sexual interference, a charge alleging the sexual touching of someone under 16, in an incident involving the same teen fan when she was 15.

Foo Fighters just announced two Taylor Hawkins tribute shows, one at Wembley and one at the Forum in LA. I was fortunate enough to attend the Chris Cornell tribute at the Forum, absolutely star studded, I imagine these will be similar.

VICTORIA SKA & REGGAE FESTIVAL

June 22–26, Victoria

victoriaskafest.ca

Reggae icons The Wailers are among the headliners for the 23rd annual Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival, which is held at four venues throughout the downtown core. Dozens of acts are scheduled to appear, from as far away as Jamaica, Brazil, and New Zealand. Plenty of programming is offered free of charge, which has earned Skafest its ”Festival of the People” moniker.

>

VICTORIA PRIDE FESTIVAL

June 23–July 2, Victoria

victoriapridesociety.org

A full schedule of events, the majority of which are free, includes the popular Pride Parade on June 26. A new route (winding from Vic West across the Johnson Street Bridge) and festival layout at MacDonald Park in James Bay will give a new sheen to this enduring — and increasingly popular — event.

>

TD VICTORIA INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

June 24–July 3, Victoria

jazzvictoria.ca

Producers of the 39th annual Jazzfest are staging events in Esquimalt for the first time ever this year, evidence that the longest-running multi-day festival on Vancouver Island is still finding new ways to pique interest. A whopping 10 days of concerts are on the books, including performances by Gregory Porter, Lisa Fischer, Gogo Penguin and the Brubeck Brothers Quartet.

>

LAKETOWN SHAKEDOWN

June 30–July 2, Lake Cowichan

laketownshakedown.com

Buzz over headliners Wu-Tang Clan has been loud in recent weeks, pointing to big attendance numbers for Laketown Shakedown, held over the summer’s first long weekend. Expect sets by Arkells, the Glorious Sons, Sugar Ray and Everlast of House of Pain (replacing Big Boi from OutKast) to be boisterous — befitting a shakedown held on a 250-acre private site.

>

VICTORIA’S CANADA DAY

July 1, Victoria

canadadayvictoria.ca

Main Stage performers for the city’s first official Canada Day celebration in three years have yet to be announced, but there’s a lot  to like about what has been confirmed, including a performance by the Lekwungen Traditional Dancers. Though it was in doubt at one point, the event will include a dazzling fireworks finale.

>

VANCOUVER ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL

July 8-10, Courtenay

islandmusicfest.com

A true gem of Vancouver Island festival culture, Musicfest has a multitude of things in its favour, including the picturesque Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds, near the Tsolum River. The music is always top-tier, and sets this year from Femi Kuti, Taj Mahal and John Boutté mark the festival’s return to full strength in soulful style.

>

PHILLIPS BACKYARD CONCERT SERIES

July 9-10/Aug. 13-14, Victoria

phillipsbackyard.com

The final two installments of the first new series at Phillips Brewing (which got underway in May) in years will bring thousands back to the much-loved site, with sets over a one-month period headlined by Half Moon Run, The Beaches and Snotty Nose Rez Kids (July 9-10) and Charlotte Day Wilson, Sampa the Great and St. Paul and the Broken Bones (Aug. 13-14).

>

NORTHWEST DEUCE DAYS

July 14-17, Victoria

tourismvictoria.com

Though this hugely popular event is under new stewardship, interest in what is billed as the world’s largest assembly of “Deuces” — a term used to describe hot rods produced in 1932 — has only continued to grow. Need proof? Registration for the 10th edition, which is capped at 1,200 cars, hit capacity months ago.

>

TD ART GALLERY PAINT-IN

July 16, Victoria

aggv.ca

Upwards of 150 local artists will be showcasing their work at the 33rd annual TD Art Gallery Paint-In, which starts at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (1040 Moss St.) and fans out from there. Launched in 1987, the event has become one of the biggest and best-loved summer attractions for locals and tourists alike.

>

LAKETOWN ROCK

July 22-23, Lake Cowichan

laketownranch.com

John Fogerty, Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, Keb’ Mo’, Big Sugar, and more lead the way at Laketown Rock, a two-day rock showcase expected to draw between 5,000 and 10,000 people to the grounds of Laketown Ranch. The site will hit a fever pitch the weekend after this event (for Sunfest), but classic rock fans will find plenty of reasons to party here.

>

SPLASH AROUND TOWN: SYMPHONY IN THE SUMMER

July 22–31, Victoria

victoriasymphony.ca

The former one-day Symphony Splash has been replaced by a 10-day festival, with programming that covers a range of styles and venues. Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies — who performs July 31 with the full Victoria Symphony on the legislature lawn — leads a program that includes ticketed performances at the Royal Theatre and Christ Church Cathedral and freebies in Beacon Hill Park.

>

SUNFEST COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL

July 28-July 31, Lake Cowichan

sunfestconcerts.com

Four days of music programming is a commitment, but many who attend the party that is Sunfest jump on board at the first available opportunity. This country-music staple has plenty to celebrate, from an on-site zipline to appearances by Billy Currington (July 29) and Hootie and the Blowfish’s Darius Rucker (July 30).

>

VICTORIA FRINGE FESTIVAL

Aug. 24–Sept. 4, Victoria

intrepidtheatre.com

The second-oldest event of its kind in Canada took a break in 2020 and returned last year with a hybrid model rolled out over a six-week period. Good news for fans of the original format: The Fringe is back to exclusively in-person performances in 2022, which means 26 shows at multiple venues populating the downtown core.

>

SAANICH FAIR

Sept. 3-5, Victoria

saanichfair.ca

Saanichton will host the 154th edition of this durable event over Labour Day weekend, its home since 1868. That’s a remarkable feat, but its longevity is well-earned. After a scaled-down 2021 edition, Western Canada’s oldest agricultural fair returns to normal this year, with 50,000 attendees expected to take in the event.

>

RIFFLANDIA

Sept. 15-18, Victoria

rifflandia.com

Fans have clearly been waiting, as the first wave of tickets sold out in a matter of weeks — a full four months before showtime. Let that be a lesson to last-minute purchasers who want to partake. Buy now, or cry later.

Your VV team was granted special access today to view the setting up of the Caravan Stage Society's presentation of Virtual Rogues that will be performed on The Amara Zee vessel that is moored in Rock Bay.

This will be an audio visual and human production where the audience will be seated on the shore and view the production that will take place on the shore and the vessel.

Here is a look at the Amara Zee

A shot of a stage hand setting up on the mizzen mast

IMG_5191.JPG

Artificial Intelligence pods will also play a roll in the production

IMG_5193.JPG

The show will take place June 23 to July 10 from 22:00-23:30. Yes that 10:00 PM to 11:30 PM. It needs to be dark out. There will be chairs at the site but it wouldn't be a bad idea to throw a couple of camp chairs in the car just in case it gets busy. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT to wear lots of warm clothing. Cost is by donation so everyone can attend. Entrance will be at the north end of Store Street.

Click below to get an idea of the show.

Sir Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen and Ronnie Wood were among stars who have been wishing Sir Paul McCartney a happy 80th birthday.

The ex-Beatle turned 80 on Saturday, days after finishing a brief US tour. The milestone comes the weekend before McCartney becomes Glastonbury’s oldest solo headliner, when he takes to the Pyramid stage on Saturday.

Cameron Bandshell in Beacon Hill Park — widely considered one of the most under-used event spaces in Greater Victoria — and Bullen Park in Esquimalt, which is home to the annual Esquimalt Ribfest, are both in play for the festival for the first time ever this year. The latter is gaining momentum as a top-tier venue, and Mar wanted to ensure his programming for that space had some electricity to match.

Cutting-edge funk acts Ghost-Note and the Louis Cole Big Band open the new venue on Sunday, with the capacity for an audience of 3,500. Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio and Cha Wa (July 2), and Ludic and The Suffers (July 3) are the other concerts of the genre-pushing troika that will appear as part of the Funk & Soul in the Township program.

Mar said was contacted by Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins about bringing JazzFest to the municipality, which gave him the opportunity to cross an item off his programming bucket list. “A big, grassy field is something I’ve wanted ever since I started this festival,” he said. I’m getting too old to spend my days standing on concrete.”

Prior to building the tall ship in question, the 30-metre Amara Zee, on-board which performances of Virtual Rogues will be held tonight through July 10 in Rock Bay, Kirby and Kelder ran a one-wagon puppet show from their home in James Bay. After moving to Sooke, where they accrued a stable of horses, they relocated to the B.C. interior and formed Caravan Farm Theatre, with six horse-pulled wagons shuttling the company to each performance.

Kirby and Kelder eventually sold the farm theatre to make way for the Amara Zee. Not unlike the barges once common to the River Thames in London, England, the purpose-built tall ship was turned into a floating stage in 1997, but the couple’s theatre-in-the-wild mindset from the 1970s remains.

VIRTUAL ROGUES

Where: Rock Bay (enter at the north end of Store Street)

When: June 28-30 and July 2-3, 5-10 (nightly performances at 10 p.m.)

Tickets: Pay-what-you-can at the door

https://www.timescol...-voyage-5524474

Performances of Virtual Rogues will be held at 10 p.m. on show days and run for 90 minutes, with no intermission (patrons, who watch the performance from shore, are asked to bring their own chairs). The show is set in 2052 and is an ambitious sci-fi experiment, with characters as aerial acrobats woven throughout the story.

When I saw their performance several years ago, it was about how awful the world was going to be in the future, because of climate change, etc. It scared some young kids in the audience.

And yeah, it was a little overboard.

I don't need to pay to have someone preach climate religion to me. I will pass on this one.
