Holy smokes, for folks who can remember the little shack that was the terminal 45 years ago, this latest expansion really puts the exclamation mark on just how much the airport has expanded ... AND just how much the entire region has expanded to require this kind of square footage in the terminal.
I was out there on the weekend, and it looks like they've also got yet another massive long term parking lot expansion going on to the West of Electra Blvd.

Not sure that it was mentioned here...Sunwing is adding a third destination out of YYJ this winter. They will now fly to Huatulco in addition to Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos.

Huatulco is an awesome destination.

I took Sunwing for the first time this year, and I must say, they were pretty good. It wasn't really much different than flying with a "regular" airline.

Yep, I've had good experiences with them as well. Pro tip, they often have some pretty dynamite prices on flights between Vancouver and Toronto. You wouldn't expect to see them on that domestic route being a sun destination airline, but they do it. If you need to get to Ontario on the cheap, they can sometimes come in clutch if you can get to or happen to be in Vancouver.

Isn't Huatulco a pretty small place? Seems like it would be hard to get the numbers. Can you book air only on Sunwing or do you have to stay at an all inclusive?
It's definitely more of an emerging destination, but is highly popular with Canadians versus Americans (i.e. Toronto and Calgary trail only Mexico City in terms of air passenger traffic...almost like a version of Cuba within Mexico). Sunwing flew YYJ to Huatulco two years ago and it was a decently used route. YYJ was actually the 4th largest Canadian route to Huatulco then, even larger than bigger airports like Vancouver, Edmonton, and Winnipeg.
You can book air only, but the price difference between that or adding 7 days at an all-inclusive is negligible.

Has anyone noticed the passenger stats and movement stats lately, June was a super busy month, I'm interested in July's numbers as they are all way up !! Well over 2 million for 2018 for sure!.
I see barely any new pictures of the progress from construction on the VAA website and no mention of Phase 4 yet. Still going to be a while I guess till anything new is built after the lower hold room
Gate capacity is getting pretty close to full most days but shouldn't be an issue once seasonal services are cut till winter charter season.

While the terminal today almost looks like a real airport - I well remember the 'shack' from the 70's which isn't far off the mark - I wonder when we'll join the 21st century like most airports of roughly equivalent sized cities and build a proper multi-storey parkade instead of chewing up yet more land with yet another parking lot. Seems very much like a 1950-60's approach to me. I'm thinking specifically of Stanfield International in Halifax among others. Like those airports it seems to me we should by now be seriously thinking about building up rather than out...

It's getting to the point where YYJ will soon have to start offering shuttle flights from the parking lot to the terminal.

Yeah! And when are we getting an underground tram system to take you from one gate to another? You know like REAL airports!

The parking lot should have autonomous carts that go at 5kmh up and down the aisles all day.

Not building a parkade has kept airport improvement fees low and parking rates very low. Mess with that and you run the risk of pushing people into foot passengers on BC Ferries destined for YVR.
They shouldn't have to build a parking lot since it's surrounded by fields. Just expand the existing lots.
I am surprised we don't have some sort of YYJ park & ride. I wonder if this would be allowed on ALR land?

I agree that AIF fees are reasonable, but parking rates, not so much.
Park for a week at YYJ? $90.
I just did a quick check of a few other airports...
Nanaimo - $77
Vancouver - $75
Edmonton - $75
Calgary - $64.95
Kelowna - $62
Some of these airports do have more "premium" options with higher pricing. The above prices are all available through the airport authorities as opposed to private lots.

The next closest lot is $112.50 with a shuttle ride, and the one comparable to the distance you are from YYJ’s parking is between $30 and $50 daily with no weekly parking.
