I wonder if they have the funds to issue refunds even if they wanted to.

Just been watching flightaware with airline fleets being grounded and sent to storage.

Sunwing still shows flying out of YYJ on the Flight Information Display System (FiDS)

But their fleet is all heading to Waterloo and 6 of their 737 800's are right now crossing the Atlantic,

headed back to their lessors in Europe. The end of the winter charter season came to a early halt.

ONEX has very deep pockets.

And they would be best to let the airline fail, dump the losses and union agreement and then buy it back from the receiver and start over. You know, just like what happened to AC.

Sounds like the hard-nosed approach Onex will take is needed.

9 flights today.

Almost business as usual at YLW, still about 16+ flights per day right now.

Better than YYJ for sure, but YLW operates upwards of 50+ flights per day on a busy day. So not quite business as usual.

Yes, a long ways from the norm. YYJ was once at 60 daily a few years ago. Saturday will see only 7 flights thru this storm.

I can only guess whats keeping YLW so busy still. Oil patch still running?

Sunwing is laying off all its 470 pilots on April 8, according to the pilots' union, Unifor. Sunwing's 1,063 flight attendants will also be laid off, effective April 1, said their employees' union, CUPE.

Budget airline EasyJet has become the latest carrier to suspend operations entirely because of the coronavirus.

In a statement on Monday, the airline said that it is grounding all 334 of its planes in Europe as a result of travel restrictions across the region, adding that it cannot be sure when flights will resume.

Air Canada will temporarily lay off 16,500 employees starting this week as the airline struggles with fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Effective this Friday, the layoffs of 15,200 unionized workers and 1,300 managers will last through April and May amid drastically reduced flight capacity from the Montreal-based airline.

"To furlough such a large proportion of our employees is an extremely painful decision but one we are required to take given our dramatically smaller operations for the next while," chief executive officer Calin Rovinescu said in a statement.

Rovinescu and CFO Michael Rousseau will forego 100 per cent of their salaries for the second quarter, the company said in a statement. Other senior executives will lose between 25 and 50 per cent of their salaries, while members of the board will forego 25 per cent.

Good for them. How many of our politicians and their senior staff are doing the same thing?

Just 7 flights tmr, 2 Air Canada Express to YVR,  2 WJ Encore to YVR, 2 WestJet to YYC and a single Alaska flt to SEA.

I was at the airport thru the pre and post 9/11 days, even tho it was a shut down and gradual start up, this is something that will be remembered for a long time. And will have a long term affect on the Victoria Airport footing for airline service and destinations for a long time to come.

Same as every airport, so I don't expect this to be a long term effect (eg. past 2020, provided things go back to normal in >6 months). One thing that could really change it though is a folding of a major airline.

I suppose some airlines can start with a fresh sheet. and instead of legacy guiding them the new plan can make more economic sense.
