On the VAA website, under non-stop destinations, the VAA recently updated and the addition of the new routes offered by a few of the airlines, but also removed all but PVR sun spot charter destinations.
I guess Mexico isn't a option is winter like it use to be in the past.
Maybe next year Viva AeroBus ....

Swoop announced PVR last week, so there will still be Mexico service.
Transat won't be back, they are focusing on Eastern Canada.
Viva Aerobus operated for Sunwing. Nothing bookable from YYJ at this point on Sunwing's website for the winter season.

I'm aware of Swoops new service, it is listed. It's all the other destinations that use to be listed sadly have gone. Los cabos, Mazatlán, Cancun, etc.
Recovery of this sector will take alot of time.
Who knows, maybe HNL or the Caribbean might be offered next year.

On a airport/airplane spotter fb page, the question was asked about the closed taxi way at YYJ
A rep for the VAA stated the closed taxi way that was built and completed in Oct of 2019, maybe open by
the end of Aug 2021.
Again, VAA and NAV CAN dispute on top of money towards the construction of CCTV system.
The new control tower construction has been pushed back to approx 2024/25 and relocated to the north side of the field.

Interesting. Their operations are constrained at no jets allowed YTZ because Q400 production has been paused indefinitely. Maybe a partnership with American/JetBlue is cooking? Would have loved a YVR-YTZ. One can dream.

The CEO said in a public meeting on line, and I think in one media news story as well, it would be re located to the north side of air field, close to Mills road and where the small private hangers.
Have we got any visuals for this new control tower?

I imagine the goal is to both steal market share from the established competitors, as well as create new demand by offering lower fares than in the past.
It's been proven over and over again that neither strategy really works while letting you sustain the costs of running an airline. The market simply isn't big enough. There are so many fallen flags that have attempted to do the same and failed. Jetsgo, Greyhound Air, Harmony Airways, Skyservice, Canada 3000... The established carriers aren't simply going to roll over and not compete. Air Canada & Westjet are selling one way flights from Toronto to Vancouver for $119 in October. Who's gonna fly Flair at $89 when you don't even get a carry on with Flair? And how is Flair possibly going to break even on a flight even if they sell out at $89. At least Air Canada can sell some business class seats to make up the difference.

I do worry, a number of the new routes out of YYJ will not survive their trial period and then will be discontinued or never come back.

This is a bit of a golden marketing opportunity for Victoria AA to brand the relative convenience and safety of avoiding public transit before your flight, but we're not seeing anything in terms of marketing.
"Avoid the hassle of the ferries and public transit connections, fly across the world from YYJ with only one connection."

11 B.C. airports receiving funding to maintain regional connectivity
YYJ has seen an enormous drop in traffic during the pandemic, plummeting from nearly two million passengers through its doors in 2019 to less than 600,000 in 2020. Although there has been a small degree of bounce back in the last couple of months, numbers continue to sit at record lows. In June, 12,746 passengers went through the airport, compared to 169,825 in 2019.

I have to say, compared to same sized airports like Kelowna ( well slightly busier now than YYJ ) but also PG & Nanaimo, Victoria does nothing at all to promote, "You can fly there, from here" Zero marketing, the website is old and stale. Not a peep from any Pr unless poked by the media.
It's embarrassing.
Most of friends, family and the public think, it's still a dinky airport, with dinky planes, that only go to YVR so you can get on a real airplane.

This airport should be the hub of the Island. 500-600k catchment, if marketed right. That's easily 2.5 million or even 3 million annually, but again, if marketed right.
