As a kid, i found all of those exhibits fascinating! I remember looking at the ingenious fishhooks and fish traps in the FN section, and also thinking how cool it would be to live in a tent/dugout in the ground.
The mock-up of the ship is especialy useful, as it also represents the exploration of the world..given that, up to about 60 years ago, the vast majority of intercontinental travel was done by sea..

The problem (IMHO) is the comparative representation of FN vs settlers. Someone looking at the exhibits might believe that settlers brought technological advancement, healthcare, education and other 'modern' aspects of life to what was otherwise a group that was divided into waring factions living primarily a sustenance life. Thanks to UVIC analysis of FN written works (and not just the propaganda that settlers produced at the time) we know that isn't true and thus must be corrected to reflect what actually occurred.

Based on spanky123's posting history, I am almost positive sarcasm was implied by the above post. I am sure they will correct me if I am wrong.

I was at the BC Museum today I have been on the hold list for a year or two for the Library's Museum pass. When I entered the old town I discovered that there had been a Post-it Note attack on the town, commenting on everything from the lighting to lack of certain displays(about 100), I thought this to be odd behavior/comments even by my standards, but made the museum experience much more interesting some tourists I spoke to agreed.I think security caught up with him because when I hit the cannery there was a guy in plain clothes coming the other direction taking them all down. How did he get away with it for so long?

Wild. Exhibit manager must have been running to take them down!
Hey Todd -- the Post-it notes were from students at Lansdowne Middle School, who our Learning department had invited to critique the permanent galleries. The students were here for a full-day session testing out their critical thinking chops, and we thought they did a pretty good job. The "plain clothes guy" you spotted was one of our Learning staff members, scooping up the notes for future use.
We're inviting more and more folks (most often student teachers at universities and local classrooms of students) to do these kinds of gallery "interventions". The responses are often surprising and help us rethink how our galleries work well for the public (or don't work well -- which gives us something to aim for).

I don’t know. old town mostly it’s just a movie set which is trippy but don’t know how it’s much different from going for a walk down Lower Johnson today
Don’t know what you really learn from old town?

Did you know that the buildings are all based on real buildings in British Columbia? I find that of interest. It gives me an idea of how my grandparents may have lived. I really don't get tired of that and usually spot something new every time I go.

The “settler” exhibits are all meticulously detailed, and the result of deep research.
Many years ago, walking through for the first time with my Dad, his jaw dropped as we came around each corner of the third floor.
His repeat comment (he grew up on a farm, and later worked in mining) was along the lines of “I can’t believe it … “it” was just like this”.
For British Columbians, this pending change is actually bordering on sacrilege. The SJW’s are literally trying to erase 75% of our common history.
This museum madness really has to be stopped before these current woke loonies cause irreversible damage.
