It would be a good ending if we found out he left here and did not get back on.

Petty Officer Katelyn Shearer says Holland America reviewed surveillance video and determined the man's location was last known off the northeast corner of the Olympic Peninsula. Neither the Coast Guard nor Holland America would immediately say what the video showed. The man was described as a U.S. citizen who had been travelling alone. - See more at: http://www.timescolo...h.IYjgspxL.dpuf

it isn't easy to fall overboard on a cruiseship. . jumped maybe?

Who would want to jump off a Cruiseship, now a BC ferry I could understand.

Well, they give you your bill the night before you leave here, maybe he was still despondent over that.

Right! Because of the food.

Used to love my Triple O but then I entered the kitchen of a BC Ferry after the ventilation had been switched off, I physically can't eat it now.

All on board expenses are charged to a credit card, so he was going to pay even if he jumped ship.

Maybe the charge was not gonna go through though.

That's not a bad idea though...rack up your credit card before you cash in.

Yes I remember the disappointment on the last night of my last cruise very well, they have a cashless/no credit card system, just a charge card so easy/fun to use(and they know it), I have more Alaska photo albums purchased on board than I have photos.

I don't get this. Yes, its a charge card that is the same as your room card. How is it any different mentally to using a credit card when buying things though? I've done two cruises, and didn't buy any junk. A few drinks, specialty restaurant, but no souvenirs or shirts or booze etc. The quality isn't there for the cheap stuff, and the expensive stuff isn't cheaper than just buying at outlet malls or whatever.

Things like alcoholic drinks and shore excursions can add up fast. Gratuities, if not prepaid boost one's ship account as well. Some people spend a lot at the casino without much in the way of return. I once dropped a good chunk of change purchasing an onboard auction item, not so much because it was a great deal, but because I truly fell in love with the artwork itself. This time around I have pre-purchased a beverage package and have a $500 (US) on board credit so I expect my bill at the end of the cruise to be quite a bit smaller than usual

I mostly agree with you lanforod, last time I was on a cruise was before the novel concept of the tap credit card, I think they were better salesman on my ship, and after the ship leaves port and after some drinks charged to my onboard charge card everything looks so enticing, and I don't even have to remember my pin, maybe I get carried away with the what the hell I'm on vacation attitude.

^ Guess back in the day you also didn't need a pin for a credit card just a signature.

You do sign for every receipt on board, and it tells you how much you're spending. I don't think even a small purchase came without a receipt.

I'm not sure if they check if your card is actually yours (they have photos of you in the system).

The other day I was out along the Dallas Road waterfront right around where it meets up with Cook Street. It must have been about 10PM. While sitting on a bench, a group of people walk up to us for directions to the cruise ships. I told them it's easily a 30 minute walk back and pointed them to head west (they were unsure of which direction they needed to go). They looked a little worried that they might be late, but they trekked on.

A good 30 minutes later a guy huffing and puffing comes running up to us and asks how far he is from the cruise ships. I tell him the same story. He was so worried that he wouldn't make it back on time that I called him a cab. He said he'd been walking in circles and was uncertain where he had come from.

So this got me thinking. Why is there no signage, anywhere, along the Dallas Road pathway? We need something to guide visitors, especially when it gets dark and people start getting disoriented.

I dunno.  When you leave the ship, the water is on your right, when coming back, it's on your left.

Maybe a few signs would be cool.  Some tourists that are not on the ships might be interested to see them docked too.  Certainly it would be nice to direct them to the breakwater, too.  The signs could do double-duty.

It's also not a 30-minute walk, is it?  Maybe it's close I guess.

Sounds like the bicycle taxis should be patrolling that area in the evening.

Greater Victoria Harbour Authority celebrates arrival of six millionth cruise ship passenger to Ogden Point in Victoria, B.C.
By BCShippingNews
August 5 2015

Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) welcomed the six millionth cruise ship passenger to Ogden Point on Wednesday, July 29, 2015. To celebrate, Victoria and Joseph Winthal of San Francisco, CA were recognized as the six millionth passengers. The couple arrived as part of a family group of 14 aboard the Golden Princess cruise ship. The Winthals were greeted as they disembarked and treated to a selection of prizes and visitor experiences donated by local business and tourism partners. The couple was able to choose from these opportunities to explore the city while the ship was in port. Ogden Point is Canada's most popular port of call for cruise ships and Victoria’s cruise industry brings significant economic benefits to our capital region with hundreds of thousands of dollars of benefits to the local economy with each ship visit. This year, Ogden Point is welcoming 230 cruise ship calls, carrying more than 513,000 passengers. Under GVHA’s stewardship, the number of cruise ships arriving in Victoria has more than doubled, and the number of passengers more than tripled since 2002. The overall economic impact of cruise tourism for the Greater Victoria region is estimated to exceed $100 million in 2015 and the industry supports nearly 900 jobs.
