Capital Regional District workers who are part of a local union voted overwhelmingly in favour of potential strike action as contract negotiations continue with the CRD.
Yesterday, members of CUPE Local 1978 held a vote about job action, and 98 per cent of voters said they were in favour of a strike.
CUPE Local 1978 represents about 1,000 people who work for the CRD, and another 400 members who live in the Greater Victoria region.
The vote did not call for any immediate job action, with the union noting that it would need to serve a 72-hour strike notice and maintain essential service levels before members could strike.

CUPE Local 1978 has between 1,400 and 2,000 members depending on the time of year and represents four bargaining units:
- Capital Regional District
- Island Health (Health Science Professionals at Vancouver Island Health Authority)
- West Shore Parks and Recreation
- Greater Victoria Housing Society
Members work all across the Gulf Islands and the southern end of Vancouver Island.

After more than seven months of bargaining we have made only minor progress at the bargaining table. The CRD has refused to have any serious discussion about:
- Flex Time or a Compressed Work Week (4/10’s)
- Work from home options
- A fair wage increase
At our last bargaining date the CRD pushed us to impasse, and now we are heading to mediation on November 9 and 10.
