Rom-coms are not getting love at the box office — and Bros is no different

The article never gives any evidence to support the headline.

You really have a bee in your bonnet about this particular movie.

Not about the movie really. About the dishonest media coverage.

I guess I don't expect entertainment media coverage to be any more honest than any other media coverage these days.

I get the feeling the new Avatar movie will do poorly.

Nothing about the trailer seems compelling.

If ever there was a movie that did not need a sequel it was Avatar.

Remember the movie Willow? Recently started the tv sequel, it’s great! Good production value.

Reviews now say the story does lack, but the visuals overcome that shortfall.

I still feel it’ll underperform.

In other words it's exactly like the first movie, which I always think of as the world's most expensive video game.

The screenplay by writer/director James Cameron and co-writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver keep the plot very simple and straightforward, but does a poor job of introducing the new characters, offers too few surprises and suffers from not enough emotional depth. The first Avatar has just the right blend of Truth and Spectacle along with a compelling albeit uninspired story; the sequel has too much Spectacle and not enough Truth while the story itself isn't very exciting or suspenseful.

What ensues is essentionally more of a long and loud video game than an actual movie.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks of the franchise as big screen video games.

Here’s a blue Valentine for James Cameron’s “Avatar 2”:

Friday night looks like it produced $38 million in ticket sales. Adding the $17 million previews, the opening night total would be about $55 million.

That’s the 67th best opening night in box office history.

It’s not a gigantic start. It’s a really good one, but not a great one.

I went to see it yesterday.  It's VERY good.

Never will understand the hype for this sort of movie; I fell asleep in the first 20 minutes of the first Avatar and have less than zero interest in this one. I'm just old enough to remember when movies involved something called a plot, and acting, as opposed to CGI and special effects, both of which leave me utterly cold. At least as the latter was emerging in the industry in big productions like Terminator 2 you still had a compelling storyline. Plus,,,you know...Arnie in his prime. What more do you need, lol.

But if you want to see a "great" movie - with actual acting, by a great actor - then go watch "Nobody's Fool" with Paul Newman. I guess the Avatar's of the world are for those who think 'shooting something' with blue screen weapons is acting.......

The first Avatar movie was one of the worst I have ever seen. I could not be less interested in a sequel.

Well, I knew going in it was going to be long. Well over 3 hours. But I was quite captivated. Never checked the time until almost 2 hours in.

Worthington might be the worst actor here. The bad guy was pretty good.

I thought avatar 1 was famous for its 3D effects and CGI visuals? The story was the same old thing.

Whatever happened to the 3D fascination, anyways? For a while everything was 3D.

I’m going to assume avatar 2 isn’t 3D, and that the story is more involving than the 1st?

Know it all.

Yes it’s 3D.

The visuals are out of this world good. Nearly half the movie is underwater. It’s something.

There are sort of two stories. The family blending with another Pandora tribe (that are water based) plus the bad guys (humans) chasing them. It’s kind of a two-track thing. Females (generally) will like the first track (lots of beautiful “sea” creatures), guys might like the latter, where there is lots of awesome machinery and death.

This is a pretty good article on the water effects:

https://www.nytimes....r-2-fx-cgi.html

The last 45 minutes of frenzied swimmers (Na’vi, human and “animal”) and crazy future-boat action was quite something. CGI for sure, but it’s more believable than say spacecraft or landcraft like in Dune. You say “yea, that could be a real thing in 2050”.

To balance out the old fogeys who didn’t like the first movie, I very much enjoyed it and am looking forward to seeing this new one. Might even splurge to see in theatres which is a rarity for me now.
