Nothing to see here. Just another clueless pedestrian dashing unexpectedly in front of a vehicle. They should always be aware that after two lanes of traffic stopped at a red light, there might be a third car running a red light in the last lane.

The CRD needs to change their blame the victim videos to show them how to jaywalk with awareness. The skill they were teaching with their previous videos are transferrable.

Not blaming the victim here but how can you be so absolutely oblivious to a car coming through the red light here?  Completely preventable.

VW, not saying that you are out to lunch here…, but yeah you’re completely out to lunch on this.

I wonder if the driver bothered to properly clear the windshield of snow. The right hand windows were completely snow covered, including much of the rear window.

Yes, the clearly identifiable licence plate and the good picture of the driver will make prosecution easy. We can move on to licensing bicycles next since the car-nage on our sidewalks and trails is so much worse.

John Ducker: Mind-boggling tales from the impaired-driving beat

One unit alone picked up 14 impaireds plus six 24-hour suspensions in the first three weeks of December

Times Colonist, December 31, 2021

To hear some of the tales told by Cst. Stephen Pannekoek, a guy who has booked a lot of impaireds in his career, you soon realize that when catching drunk or drugged drivers, there’s no such expression as: “Now I’ve seen everything.”

That point was highlighted one more time to the veteran VicPD traffic cop and his partner when they were dispatched to an impaired driving call late one morning in the lower Cook Street area.

The suspect vehicle took off before police arrived but was followed by motorists who called it in via 911. Pannekoek caught up a few moments later when the guy got stuck on a narrow Fairfield street behind a crew unloading a delivery truck.

The driver had a bit of liquor odour on him and his eyes were glassy but his walking and talking were unremarkable. By most appearances he was Mr. Normal, except for two things.

Minutes before, he had mowed down a pedestrian in a crosswalk and when he blew into the breathalyzer about an hour later his two readings registered at .320, exactly four times the legal limit.

“I had to triple check the readings,” Pannekoek said.

VW, not saying that you are out to lunch here…, but yeah you’re completely out to lunch on this.

Would any of you seriously walk across Blanshard street, even at a crosswalk and on a green, without making sure each successive lane has stopped cars in it?  That's just standard practice.  I truly do not understand this woman walking obliviously into the path of a moving car, even if she "was in the right" or had the right-of-way.

Just like you'd never walk across a mid-block crosswalk without checking each lane before walking into it, or watching for a right turner when you walk across any standard intersection crosswalk.

For example if Car A and the bicycle were both approaching a red light here, would you simply stride into this crosswalk as soon as you get the pedestrian light (green arrow in the diagram), BEFORE you are positive they are both stopping?

Nobody sane would.

As a pedestrian you have to use common sense.  It takes very little extra time.

I truly believe that while most car/pedestrian collisions are the fault of the car driver, almost all could be prevented by the pedestrian just using basic awareness practices.

If that woman had not stopped short slightly, she could just as well be dead.  She was lucky to be pushed off to the side.

It's also unfortunate that nobody chased the car to get a license plate.

Lucky we have such modern police surveillance technology.

The police have too be able to clearly place someone in the driver's seat. Recall how long it took to place charges against the driver who ended up with a dead cyclist in the back of his pickup truck.

Even if there is a prosecution, we've seen the recent minimal sentences for far more severe car/pedestrian accidents.

As I said earlier, shrug. That's the cars-first attitude.

I wouldn’t paint an entire society by the actions of a single person.

Yes, police have to place the individual, but the alternative is incarcerating an innocent person.

I think the license plate is covered with snow. What about if we all had clothing with large numbers

Common sense is not very common especially here on the Island of Misfit Toys.

If you suddenly walked out into the crosswalk with your coffee in the downtown core probably got a couple followers looking at their iPod.

Car has been found:

Investigators have seized a vehicle closely resembling the vehicle that struck a young woman at Bay and Blanshard streets yesterday.

Just after 10 p.m. last night, VicPD Patrol officers located a vehicle closely resembling the vehicle involved in the collision. A member of the public who had seen the video of the collision online recognized the vehicle, located it and called police.

Patrol officers attended, noted damage consistent with a recent collision, and seized the vehicle. It was towed to VicPD’s secure storage area for processing by our Forensic Identification Section officers who are working with VicPD’s Collision Reconstruction Team investigators to determine if this vehicle was involved in the collision.

There have been no arrests.

Officers were called to the intersection of Bay and Blanshard streets just after 9 a.m. yesterday morning after a pedestrian was struck while crossing at the intersection. The young woman was crossing the street, in the cross walk, with the light, when she was struck by a vehicle travelling northbound that failed to stop for the red light. The driver of the vehicle continued through the intersection, narrowly avoiding additional collisions with other vehicles. The driver of the vehicle did not stop.

The incident was captured on video which was shared on VicPD’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages as well as VicPD.ca.

Members of the public shared the video widely. The member of the public who recognized the vehicle saw the video shared online and followed up with police.

The young woman who was struck by the vehicle was released from hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She lost her mobile phone in the collision. If you located a mobile phone in the area of Bay and Blanshard streets yesterday morning, please call (250) 995-7654 extension 1 so we can return it to her. She continues to recover.

Investigators are still hoping to speak with the driver of the Tesla Model Y that was making the left hand turn onto Blanshard Street as they may have additional video of the vehicle involved and information about the incident.

Several people on scene came to the young woman’s aid, including the people who supplied the dashcam video which has been key to our ongoing investigation. While not captured on video, they exited their vehicle when safe to do so, provided first aid and comfort, remained on scene until officers arrived and provided timely access to crucial video evidence. Additional people in the area, including a City of Victoria employee and a driver of a vehicle nearly struck in the collision, all rushed to the young woman’s aid. Officers are thanking all of these people for their help.

This investigation remains ongoing. If you are the driver of the vehicle involved, have footage of the collision, or have information about the incident and have yet to speak with investigators, please call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654, extension 1. To report what you know anonymously, please call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

I knew those lazy bastards were unlikely to go out to the highway in west shore. Or wake up in time for the planned protest time of 7am to 7:30am.

They had to get to the protest site first. But people are going to work and kids to school, so roads were a little more congested than they might have imagined them to be that early.

Protesters have blocked southbound traffic at Douglas Street and Burnside Rd E as part of a demonstration on Monday morning.

Victoria Police officers are on scene and the department says they are “working to keep everyone safe.”

Looks to be less than a dozen of them.
