A couple in Campbell River, B.C., has launched a court action against the provincial government after it refused to register their infant’s name due to its Kwak’wala lettering.

Crystal Smith and Raymond Shaw say they won’t register nine-month-old λugʷaləs K’ala’ask Shaw until B.C.’s Vital Statistics Agency can accept his name as written.

That agency is now named in a petition to the court alleging the refusal violates their freedom of expression rights, and constitutional protection from discrimination.

The Tseshaht First Nation is seeking compensation from the federal government for a highway it says was built on its territory despite its opposition.

The nation submitted a specific claim earlier this month with the government, citing the "unlawful and unauthorized" use of its land to build the Pacific Rim Highway across central Vancouver Island starting in the late 19th century.

The Pacific Rim Highway, also known as Highway 4, today connects the east and west coasts of the Island between Qualicum Beach and Tofino.

Tseshaht elected Chief Ken Watt says the federal government not only allowed the province to build a road through the First Nation's reserve in 1889 without consultation, but it also never compensated the nation for the use of its land.

"From 1890 on we've had serious concerns and incidents that have occurred along this highway ... and we shared our concerns, but the federal government allowed it despite our opposition," Watts said on CBC's On The Island.

Monetary compensation seems very settler/colonial.

A major professional dance company in B.C.'s Interior is marking its 20th anniversary by showcasing performances by an Indigenous choreographer throughout its 2022-2023 season.
Ballet Kelowna, which was founded in 2002, announced this week that Tla'amin First Nation member Cameron Fraser-Monroe will be its first artist-in-residence.

The headline should read:

1/25000 of British Columbians want to rename province to recognize Indigenous heritage

"Public opinion firm Research Co. surveyed 800 B.C. adults between Oct. 29 and 31" that's 266 out of 5,286,528 people.

If you're going that route for survey information, you'd need to do the same for everything, so I take it you'll never be posting anything based on a survey that isn't 100% of the data set. Its not like survey results (when done properly) don't extrapolate to actual trends. Never happens, nope.

I'm not saying surveys don't have their place. I am saying the headline is a lie. 1/3 of surveyed British Columbians would have at least not been a lie. Media has grown too comfortable lying.

"1/3 of British Columbians" evokes an image that millions want this. This can hardly be assumed by polling 800 people.

Yup. You’re preaching to the choir.

Consider how many crazy headlines the US media has created about the “American people” based on the polling of a few hundred people.

Ah yes, fair. Just need to add: 'People have added additional context to this article that may change your perspective after you pay $8'.

It's kind of normal, stats say somewhere between 500-1,000 is enough.  Doesn't makes sense but...

Did you not read headlines in the 80's?

A man who illegally harvested cedar from an area of major cultural significance in B.C.'s Great Bear Rainforest has seen his fine increased more than tenfold, in a decision the Wei Wai Kum First Nation's elected chief called a "game changer."

Timothy Holland will now have to pay $131,759 for cutting and removing timber outside his legal tenure in Wei Wai Kum territory, following a recent decision from the Forest Appeals Commission. His original administrative penalty had amounted to $12,000.

An appeals commission panel estimated that Holland, operating as Bigfoot Forest Productions, made at least $167,110 by "wantonly and flagrantly" ignoring the boundaries of his Forestry Licence to Cut (FLTC) between 2017 and 2020.

Wei Wai Kum Chief Chris Roberts told CBC he believes the increased fine will serve as a powerful deterrent for anyone thinking of doing the same thing within his nation's territory.

"It's a game changer. I think that's something where we can say, wow, OK, there's clearly penalties and consequences that people will face when these types of actions are taken," Roberts said.

But there is no evidence, however, to demonstrate that Danielle Smith’s family is Cherokee.

According to U.S census records, Mary Frances Crowe was born in 1870 in Georgia about 20 years after the forcible removal of the Cherokee by the U.S. government.

APTN News worked with a genealogist in Canada to establish Danielle Smith’s family tree.

The information that was gathered was then reviewed by Kathy Griffin, a Cherokee genealogist who lives in Midland, Texas to verify whether or not Smith had Cherokee roots.

Griffin said it’s not unusual for settlers from Tennessee, Oklahoma, or Kansas to claim some Cherokee ancestry.

“They always claim their grandmothers or great-grandmothers were full-blood Cherokee Indian,” said Griffin.

“We used to live in a small part of Alabama and a small part of Georgia, a little bitty part of South Carolina, a little part of North Carolina and a little part of Tennessee,” said Griffin of the Cherokee nations.

“I looked through the family tree and none of those people were living near the Cherokee.”

None of Smith’s ancestors are enrolled as members of the historical Cherokee Tribes: The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians of Oklahoma, or the Cherokee Nation.

The Cherokee are a well-documented group. In addition to tribal enrolment, they also kept what was called a “Census of Intruders” that showed people who were living within their territory but were not members of the nation.

"CORRECTION: An earlier version of the story listed Danielle Smith as an only child, she was in fact one of five children."

Best and most telling part of that entire article....
