Half a dozen derelict boats washed ashore in Cadboro Bay over the weekend, leaving local organizations and jurisdictions scrambling to organize a clean up.

The boats appeared on both the Saanich and Oak Bay sides of the bay after a weekend of heavy wind – southeast gusts up to 80 km/h hit Greater Victoria on Saturday, leaving thousands of Islanders without power, including 224 Oak Bay customers.

Eric Dahli, Dead Boat Society co-founder and chair of the Cadboro Bay Residents Association says at least four boats have washed up and two have sunk. At least one boat is leaking gasoline into the water.

is it great that we have a dead boat society?

A huge shout-out of thanks to Lisa and the COV for their quick work in protecting Victoria's waterways as they promised when the courts granted them the injunction to remove boats in 2017.  So happy that they didn't waste their valuable time on issues unrelated to their jurisdiction and instead did what they said they were going to do!

Maybe they were heritage designated by the city?

This "boat" was actually more like a compound of hoarding. At least they have some hasmat around the burnt out wreckage.

And this "boat" which sunk in late January is now tethered to the Tressle with a piece of polypropylene!  Just waiting for another fire to happen and burn down the Galloping Goose Tressle:

nothing about that looks stable.  neither the platform nor the inhabitant's state of mind.

Well at least they have a lifetime supply of toilet tissue surrounding their empire.

On July 15, Aryze Developments installed a circular dock in the Gorge Waterway near Banfield Park for swimmers to rest on and take in the views. The first person to notice the dock was awarded a coffee shop gift card and the first swimmer to reach the platform was treated to Phillips Brewery beer that had been left there by the company.

Now, the dock’s position in the Gorge may be at risk. On Sept. 10, Aryze Development co-owner Luke Mari explained the company had been contacted by the federal government and told they needed a permit for the platform to remain in the water. The company has applied to the Canadian government and submitted maps, drawings and information for consideration. Now, the application has entered the public feedback phase and Aryze Developments is calling on the community to show support by leaving a comment on the application.

Does anyone know if the Gorge Waterway is safe enough for swimming? I know the annual Swimfest touts the water as being clean but has there been any testing to see how much of the liquid dump remains?

I know that I’d swim somewhere else.

I love swimming in the Gorge. It is such a great local spot and yes Island Health tests the water and it is usually one of the cleaner bodies of water.

^ That little bay to the west of the Oak Bay Marina has eaten more boats than one could imagine.

indeed. maybe it looks deceptively safe.

but you know what they say when that bay, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
When the gales of January came early

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below Oak Bay
Takes in what Bowker Creek can send her
