The NHL and NHL Players’ Association are closing in on an agreement that will put international play back on the hockey calendar for the foreseeable future, starting with a tournament in Feb. 2025.

But it won’t be called the World Cup of Hockey. And it won’t feature an entry from hockey superpower Russia.

“Probably not,” NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh told Daily Faceoff on Thursday in Stockholm, to be featured in an upcoming episode of Frankly Speaking.

Other hockey federations, believed to be Finland and Sweden, made it clear they would decline to participate if Russian-born players were involved in the tournament as a result of Russia’s unprovoked attack and war on Ukraine.

“There’s a bigger issue at play here,” Walsh said. “You have other federations that won’t allow other players to play in the tournament. You have to take all of that into account.”

Chicago's NHL team is cutting ties with Corey Perry. The franchise is still answering questions about the culture of the organization.

The team says Perry engaged in unacceptable conduct, and they are moving toward terminating his contract in the latest twist involving the veteran winger who was sent home last week without explanation.

The team said Tuesday in a statement that an internal investigation showed Perry acted in violation of his NHL Standard Player Contract and club policies "intended to promote professional and safe work environments." Chicago put Perry on unconditional waivers and said his deal will be terminated as long as he clears Wednesday.

The team has not given any indication as to what Perry did to warrant these actions.

Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson addressed the wild rumors surrounding Corey Perry shortly after he was kicked off the team ... saying the winger's contract termination had nothing to do with superstar Connor Bedard's mother.

Perry was placed on unconditional waivers following an internal investigation on Tuesday ... in which the team determined he "engaged in conduct that is unacceptable" and violated the terms of his contract and the Blackhawks' internal policies.

The move came on the heels of speculation Perry was involved in a personal relationship with Bedard's mom, Melanie ... and while the talk didn't hold much weight, many ran with it on social media.

Davidson cleared the air after the team washed its hands of Perry ... and even though he did not mention Bedard by name, it's clear that's what he was addressing.

"This does not involve any players or their families and anything that suggests otherwise or anyone that suggests otherwise is wildly inaccurate and, frankly, it's disgusting," Davidson said.

Is that a joke about a guy’s mom? What the?

These guys have one job to do. Use the stick to push the round thing into the little net, on ice skates. And they still find a way to mess it up.

Pro sports is so bonkers.

Well, that is the rumour out there.

Connor Bedard is a 18-year-old rookie phenom.  Absolute franchise player.

The rumours are that Perry slept with Bedard's mom. The truth is probably a lot less salacious - I've seen multiple posts it was for groping a team staffer.

Thought exercise: If it had been Bedard who did this, and not an old star on probably the last year or two of his career, would the Blackhawks have done the same thing, or would they have swept it under the rug like they did with Kyle Beach?

Different.  But you might also feel the same way in your company if your top salesperson with all the big contracts does some shady stuff.   Some staff are certainly more expendable than others.

I haven’t been paying much attention since about 1990, but don’t the canucks do this every five years or so? Have a fabulous early season but can’t maintain and choke toward the end?

It's usually about every 10 years or so.

It typically culminates in a Stanley Cup Riot in downtown Vancouver.

In a recent episode of the Spittin' Chiclets podcast, hockey legend Wayne Gretzky unveiled a hidden chapter from the Cold War era. He recounted a remarkable encounter with the Russian hockey team before the 1987 Canada Cup. Gretzky shared how he invited five prominent Soviet players, Alexei Kassatonov, Igor Larionov, Vladimir Krutov, Sergei Makarov, and their coach Viktor Tikhanov, to his parents' house for a BBQ.In a bold move, Gretzky went even further, sneaking beers for the Russian players, who were prohibited from drinking by the strict KGB regulations.

That’s interesting. There were no games in Edmonton so they must have been in Hamilton. Which I did not realize is only about 25 minutes from Brampton.

Connor McDavid had two goals and an assist and backup goalie Calvin Pickard made 27 saves for the shutout as the Edmonton Oilers kept their spectacular streak alive with a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.

Zach Hyman also scored while Leon Draisaitl had three assists for the Oilers (28-15-1) who have now won 15 games in a row, becoming just the fifth team in NHL history to meet the mark.

The record is 17 wins in a row by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992-93. The Oilers are now 23-3-0 in their last 26 games and have gone a franchise-record 13 consecutive games allowing two or fewer goals.

Canucks pull a big trade with Calgary getting the consensus No 1 center in the run up to the trade deadline, Elias Lindholm. But they had to pay a price to do it, including shipping Andrei Kuzmenko (who is signed through next year), a 2024 1st round draft (that one hurts), a couple of minor league D prospects including one of them who is a very highly regarded offensive player, and a conditional 4th rounder also from 2024.

No word on whether this deal includes salary retention for Kuzmenko. If they can't extend Lindholm then they will have paid that price for what amounts to a rental, as he is a free agent at the end of the season.

I wonder if they will still try to swing another trade with the Flames to bag D Chris Tanev.....

I think an interesting trade. All in for playoffs. If Lindholm can perform like Kesler in 2011…

Early analyst reviews are giving both teams an "A" with the Canucks apparently going all in realizing this team is for real and shoring up a position of need, i.e. getting an accomplished 2C who will play behind Pettersson but one who can not only provide offence but also play the 200-foot game that Tocchet loves as well as kill penalties, arguably the one area where they were weak.

Calgary gets a boatload of assets for a team starved for them, and which frankly looks like it sees the writing on the wall and is going to go all in to restock the draft and prospects cupboards. They've still got Noah Hanifan and Chris Tanev and if they play their cards right and manage to offload both for a similar haul they could potentially set themselves up for real long term success 2-3 years down the road.

I don't think there are serious issues with the Canucks PK, but this can only make it better and deeper. IIRC, in 2024 its firing like, 90%.

Last year's league worst PK is long gone.
