The PK is currently middle of the pack - sitting squarely at 80% statistically, which is average in 2024; it needed a boost and got it with a guy who gives the Canucks the right-handed faceoff guy they sorely lacked on their depth chart. Granted he came with a stiff price but it was worthwhile and definitely needed if they expect to go deep into the playoffs.

Case of unopened 1979 hockey cards from Sask. sells for over $5M at auction

A Canadian bidder won the case, which could possibly contain Wayne Gretzky rookie cards

The case holding unopened boxes of cards is estimated to possibly hold from 25 to 27 Wayne Gretzky cards from his rookie year, but no one knows for sure, according to Simonds. Values vary, but mint condition Gretzky rookie cards have been sold for $3.75 million.

There were about 15 unique bidders, but in the end it came down to an American and Canadian duking it out until the Canadian won and bought the case for $3,100,000 US ($4,180,815 Cdn).

Wonder how this played out.  Good bet, or crazy risk?

Near mint # 99 OPeeChee rookie cards typically go for between $7-10k; "mint" cards which are extremely rare can fetch literally millions each. The last mint-graded Gretzky rookie card brought in over $5 million CDN in 2021. Theoretically this case could have as many as twenty or more Gretzky rookies, the odds of one of them being 'mint' are slim but IMO as long as the buyer does not open the individual boxes in the case - from what I understand that is the intention - then this is more than worth the gamble.

Gretzky was pretty shrewd too when it comes to his rookie card; he signed but one which he gave to his daughter meaning she has the only signed such card in existence. If it ever hit the market the selling price would be astronomical.

Saw this story posted a couple of hours ago then it was removed but according to a HNIC insider the Canucks and Elias Petterrson are working towards an eight year, $104 million dollar contract extension. Not done yet but apparently all but agreed to in principal.........

Yeah they won’t let him go. That’s about the cost for top end talent these days. Sure makes Miller and Hughes bargain deals look even better!

Bettman just refuses to cut his losses on the Coyotes. Ridiculous.

Jets need to drop prices, is what I hear there.

Coyotes are in a temporary small arena.

Bettman just refuses to cut his losses on the Coyotes.

The Coyotes are currently playing home games at Mullet Arena in Tempe, which will officially become the sole home of the Arizona State Sun Devils hockey teams after the Coyotes depart. Their current contract is structured to end following next season. However, there is an option for another season, which appears likely since the Coyotes still have yet to find a permanent home.

This decision does not come lightly, as plenty of homework has been done over the last few years to find the best possible long-term solution for the team to stay in Arizona. The current status of the search lands the Coyotes in north Phoenix, near the Desert Ridge Marketplace. Owner Alex Meruelo is planning to bid on a plot of land in an upcoming auction, expected to begin on March 14.

Prior to this new location, many other attempts at building an arena and surrounding entertainment facilities have been unsuccessful. Most notably, the Tempe Entertainment District proposal was voted down on May 16, 2023. That project would have added apartments, an arena and entertainment facilities on a 46-acre property. However, Tempe residents protested against the project for weeks leading up to the vote, which was an overwhelming “no” to the proposal.

It's not Bettman, it's the other owners.  They are Bettman's boss.  So many people think Bettman is the boss of the league.  He's not, he's a spokesman for the majority of the owners.

The rest of the teams will make MUCH more money from expansion fees than a relocation.  Houston should have a team.  And/or Portland.

The other owners don't make anything from the Coyotes be in the red for decades. Move the team, move on. Just move it to Houston or SLC.

Can still expand anyways, like they are planning to.

Years ago, many years ago when the Yotes were first in trouble financially, Bettman was adamant they would not be moved.  He doesn't like to eat his words and will do just about anything to keep them there.  So I'm not convinced its the other owners......

The other owners do not lose anything from the Coyotes' misfortune.

Allowing them into a new market means that the other owners will miss out on massive expansion fees.  You've removed a possible expanison city.  When a new team is granted, 95% of the expansion fee is distributed to the other owners.

It's not him, it's the other owners.  Bettman is a spokeperson for the Board Of Governors, a 32-member board.

Phoenix is big enough to have a team.

Big enough, but unwilling to work with the team to support it (they need an arena!). so... move it.

Move it where?

Hamilton would make sense but Toronto has a veto. Atlanta maybe?

But other markets are potential for expansion.

Kansas City I think better than Milwaukee. Much bigger metro area, and I imagine that many in Milwaukee are hardcore Blackhawks or Wild fans?

Personally, I'd love Portland.

Utah Unicorns, Portland Pansies, and Houston Holies.
