^$5400 for one damn rifle!

For that price they could just hire a hit man when they needed one.

I'm willing to bet that there is 10% of CS residents who have one or more suitable weapons in their closet they would be willing to donate for a $500 tax concession.
Life's a journey......so roll down the window and enjoy the breeze.

Central Saanich Public Hearing: Wed Dec 5, 6:30p, CS Fire Training Centre
We have a busy Public Hearing coming up this Wednesday night with a triple-header Agenda that will provide the public the opportunity to comment on the sale of compost, private docks and a subdivision on Greig Ave. The public is encouraged to attend so that they can be heard on all three of these topics. Up until the end of the Public Hearing will be the final opportunity for CS Council to receive input from the Public before Council deliberates on the proposed bylaw amendments at a future Council meeting. Please be advised that Council cannot receive any new information from the Public once the hearing has been closed.
Agenda:
1. Central Saanich Land Use Bylaw Amendment Bylaw No. 1794, 2012 – 1231 Greig Ave
2. Central Saanich Land Use Bylaw Amendment Bylaw No. 1785, 2012 – Private Docks
3. Central Saanich Land Use Bylaw Amendment Bylaw No. 1795, 2012 – Sale of Agricultural Compost

Tonight’s Central Saanich Public Hearing was not a record in terms of its length. However, with 100+ people in attendance, and over 3 hours of presentations on 3 Bylaw Amendments, it was the longest hearing I have attended as a Councillor. I cannot stress enough the importance of the public attending such an event to be heard as citizens by their Mayor and Council. I would like to acknowledge the people in attendance tonight for attending and for voicing their opinions. I would like to also thank all of those who have provided letters ahead of time on these and other CS issues. On these three amendments, we as a Council now go into what I have termed the “no fly zone”, which means that we cannot receive any further information from the public on any of these three amendments until after these amendments receive Final Reading at a future Council meeting. In the meantime, I am sure there is another issue or two we can still tackle as a Council. See you in Chambers for a future meeting!

Councillor Adam Olsen is going to try for the Green nomination for Saanich & Islands. If he gets it he will resign from CS and then the up-coming by-election will have two vacancies to fill.

@VicHockeyFan - Yes, that could make for a more interesting upcoming byelection in CS! Should be interesting to see how many candidates step forward for 1or 2 vacancies.

As things wind down for the Holiday Season, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for your engagement and support of my role as a Councillor for Central Saanich! It has been a great year and I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to represent CS at the Council table as well as on the commissions and boards around the CRD.
I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that the year ahead will bring as I continue to learn all about municipal politics and how CS fits within the CRD. I look forward to continuing the engagement and dialogue with you all through in-person meetings, phone calls, emails, Facebook, Vibrant Victoria, Twitter and those times we run into each other on the street or at the soccer pitch!
Best wishes for a safe and relaxing Holiday Season, see you in 2013!!

What’s on the municipal agenda this week: Meeting at Panorama Rec Centre on Monday, Council meeting on Monday night and then on Saturday I will be attending the Te’mexexw Treaty Advisory Committee (TTAC) Forum of Councils.
Monday’s Council meeting will be at 7p at the CS Municipal Hall. Here are the details for Monday’s meeting:

It has been announced online that the Green Party of BC has acclaimed Central Saanich Councillor Adam Olsen as their candidate for Saanich North and the Islands in the upcoming provincial election. First, I would like to thank Adam for his service to CS over the last 4 years as Councillor. I have come to appreciate the time and effort that municipal Councillors spend in both for Council/Committee meetings, but also in terms of their commitments to other local organizations and Boards. Secondly, I would also like to personally thank him for the guidance and coaching he has provided me with during my first year on Central Saanich Council. He has always been happy to share his insights and experiences.
http://www.peninsulanewsreview.com/news/186097781.html
As for the Central Saanich By-election slated for this Spring, this should make things a little more interesting as Adam’s resignation from CS Council will vacate a 2nd seat. There has been a great deal of speculation in terms of who may run in the by-election, however until they officially submit their papers, it is not known who will actually be on the ballot. Until then, it will be “business as usual” around the Council table as we shall move ahead with the District business and later this month Council will sit down with the Senior Staff to talk about the Strategic Plan for the upcoming year in CS.
As usual, I shall endeavour to keep you apprised of the business at the Council table.

I wanted to provide an update on a couple of items from last week’s Central Saanich Council committees meeting. The first item was regarding a potential Town Hall referendum accompanying the upcoming Central Saanich By-election (#CSVote13). Staff looked into the feasibility of running the Borrowing Bylaw Referendum in conjunction with the upcoming election in the Spring. It was determined that it would not be an opportunity due to the fact that it would substantially delay the election as the District as there is still too much to be done in the way of public consultation and final costing that has to be done before the question could be put to the residents of CS. One idea I put forward was whether or not there are any other pending questions that we as a District would like to ask our residents while they are at the polls for the election, that question will still be evaluated.
A second item I wanted to share is that our Planning Department have announced the ability to turnaround Residential Building Permits in just 5 days, assuming all of the required information has been provided by the Applicant. I applaud the District staff for their efforts in this area as I believe it is important that we are providing effective and efficient service to our local residents, businesses and developers.
On the Agenda for Monday night’s meeting, more details on the process as we move closer to establishing the CS By-election date(#CSVote13).

Locked and loaded, strapped in for a wild week of community engagement on the Saanich Peninsula!! It begins with a CS Council meeting Monday night. Then on Tuesday, the evening begins with coaching at Blue Heron Park for Peninsula Soccer, and then it is over to the Mary Winspear Centre for the Peninsula Celebrations Society’s AGM. On Wednesday there is a CS Public Hearing in the Fire Training Centre at the Muni Hall. Thursday morning I am attending a Peninsula Chamber Board Meeting, followed by more soccer coaching that evening at Blue Heron Park, followed by a Peninsula Recreation Commission meeting at Panorama Rec Centre!
Wow! If ever there was a time to strap a GoPro camera to my chest and start making a reality show on the life of a municipal BC Councillor, this would be the week!! Here’s to what I know will be an awesome week of community engagement with all types of groups around the Peninsula!! I hope to see you in my travels this week!!

I am making a return tonight (Tuesday) to YYJChat on Twitter between 7:30-8:30pm. If you have not been part of a YYJChat session, then you have to check it out: http://victoriawave.ca/ YYJChat is a weekly discussion online between a guest (politician, athlete, media person, business sector representative, etc), a moderator and anybody on Twitter searching out the hashtag, #yyjchat. The moderator will typically pose 5-6 questions to the guest throughout the hour to which the guest will respond or comment on, and meanwhile, all of those following the discussion have the option to ask their own questions. My first YYJChat experience was during the UBCM conference last Sep where I along with City of Victoria Councillor, Shellie Gudgeon fielded a variety of questions regarding the conference and BC municipal politics. It was an action packed couple of hours while we fielded a variety of questions over Twitter, live from the Bengal Lounge in the Empress. It was a blast as my Blackberry got a serious workout!!

Well, later this evening I return to the “hotseat” for another session, this time on my own!! So if you are on Twitter, perhaps you may want to check out the action this evening between 7:30-8:30 pm (PST) under the hashtag, #yyjchat. For those of you not on Twitter, you can view the summary of the discussion here: http://victoriawave.ca/2013/01/yyjchat-carl-jensen-central-saanich-councillor/

See you online!
