The reason this isn't at least 5 floors is why again?

Beats me, but the answer to that probably hasn't changed since:

I agree...this project is hardly quality.

or

Ahh....Victoria...when a 4-storey shoebox is considered a "fine" addition.

or

It really doesn't take long to build a 4-floor shoe box. What a waste of prime downtown real estate. Based on this piece of blandness there's no fear of becoming Vancouver any time soon.  :whyme:

or

Whoda thunk? A 4-floor, non-descript rectangular box. :squint:

Your point being that I am consistent in my dislike of this squat cracker box?

^I think ZGsta is trying to say is we get your point, no need to repeat yourself.  I am not sure what you expect to see living in Victoria?

Now that I've seen this project in person, I think it will be pretty good.

A 10 floor building backing right up to another 10 floor building? No thank you!

I'm pretty sure it's concrete, not wood frame, by the way.

Seriously though, won't this building be the first of its type in Victoria? I'm trying to remember if there's another faux-heritage commercial block that was built from scratch. There's the big reno job on the 700-block of Yates, but that was an actual historic building that they gutted and transformed. I think the only commercial building that comes close would be the faux-heritage hotel wing at the corner of Johnson and Broad? Are there any others?

That is the most defeatest attitude I have ever heard. It's no wonder we end up with 4-storey boxes if locals can't have more imagination than this.

Sometimes the best building for a site is a four floor building.

I'm sure four floor (and shorter) buildings are constructed in London and New York City too.

Anything taller right behind the Sovereign would look like crap IMO.

What about the falls

That's not even close to comparable.

The Falls may have two tall tower sections nearby, but they are not directly abutting each other like they would have been at this site. The Sovereign is literally right behind the Argus, a few feet from the property line. It would have been absurd.

Spacing of high rises is important.
