The City Centre Hotel on Douglas between Discovery and Caledonia caught fire last night. This complex once housed Sopranos Karaoke.

A blaze broke out in the Capital City Centre Hotel late Thursday after a man reportedly threatened to set a suite on fire. The Red Cross was on its way, as were emergency services personnel and Our Place is assisting, Isherwood said.
The hotel is used by B.C. Housing, he said.
Will this be deemed a "survival fire"?

Wonder what this will cost the taxpayer?
We'll probably never know if the costs to repair the damage are kept as secret as the takeover of this hotel by the province.

________
Deputy chief Dan Atkinson said Friday morning that of the 85 people evacuated from the building, 50 have been provided alternate housing through Emergency Management B.C. and the Red Cross’ emergency assistance program. Some displaced people were temporarily housed on a B.C. Transit bus, Atkinson said.

I guess there is no word on the other 9 or more people that were never evacuated. unless some individuals had more than one room.

All 94 suites were occupied...85 people [were] evacuated from the building...
Were (at least) 9 people left in the building during the fire or did some of the 85 people occupy more than one suite?

Victoria, BC – A man was apprehended after a mental health barricade and suspected arson that sent several people to hospital last night.
Patrol officers were called to a suite at a multi-unit residential temporary housing building in the 1900-block of Douglas Street just before 8:30 p.m. last night after a man in crisis called police. The man reported that he was armed.
Officers attended and began to speak with the man from outside his suite. The man indicated that he was armed, at risk of harm and had barricaded the suite door.
While officers continued to speak to the man from outside his suite and resolve the incident safely, the smoke detector in the suite began to sound and smoke was observed coming from the suite. Officers attempted to enter the suite to rescue the man but were held back by the barricaded door.
Officers then witnessed fire within the suite and made a second entry attempt. This time, officers were able to get into the suite, but were pushed back by heavy smoke and flames.
Officers evacuated tenants from the building and Victoria Fire Department firefighters attended and fought the fire.
During the evacuation, officers located the man who had initially called. He was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital.
In addition to the man who initially called, four people were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and several people, including officers on scene, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries related to smoke inhalation.
The fire is considered suspicious.
This incident remains under investigation.

‘Quite a sight to see’: Empty vehicle found submerged off coast of Central Saanich
Police investigating how vehicle ended up deep underwater, far from beach
https://www.vicnews....entral-saanich/
Officers were able to find the owner of the car – a woman who had been taken to the hospital for mental health-related care just five days earlier, after a caller reported a woman acting erratically. Police assisted her, and she didn’t mention the car but was soaking wet at the time. Ball assumes the woman drove onto the pedestrian path, down the stairs and into the water before climbing out.
The vehicle, which was not leaking fluids, had to be left in the ocean for the time being because there was no obvious way to get it out, as the only access is a pedestrian path that’s too small for a tow truck.

I've been there before, it's a narrow path with a steep grade near the end. I'm surprised any car made it that far.
