^^ It is more than just the tax. From what I am told, pot grown on FN reserves costs about $.75 a gram (or less). The most efficient licensed producers have costs of about $1.75. The difference is the regulatory and licensing requirements. A licensed grower can't sell directly to the retailer (middleman cut) and they must sell pot with a maximum THC of 23% (IIRC) whereas the illegal market is much higher. Add in the variety of products the illegal market offers and the fact that no tax is collected or paid and the legal market has no chance.

I said even before the law was passed years ago that this market would go the same way as the "native smokes" business out East. It would be controlled by FN with cops and politicians turning a blind eye.

Indeed the new - and now permanent - agreement with Cowichan Tribes gives them an exemption not offered to others - the ability to both produce and retail the product.

Who needs more than 23%? If it’s over 10% it’s good.

The nice illegal shop here sells simple, well made THC, CBD or combo gel caps, a dollar or two each ranging from 5mg to 50 mg and maybe even more.  A 5mg or 10mg THC gel cap is way nicer on the system than a few drinks, that's for sure. Whoever is buying the 50mg must have some serious pain issues or just likes to get really baked.

Doesn’t weed make people paranoid and sketched out? 50mg is 10x more than 5mg, but would its effect on a person be compounding? Like you can drink one beer and you’re ok, but drink 10 and you might be in big trouble.

Yeah some people get paranoid for sure, they’d probably rather just be left alone haha.

I don’t know the science, but I’d say alcohol is compounding as well then.

I think 5-10mg thc in an edible is a decent recreational amount, but if you aren’t sure it’s best to start slow. These people taking 50mg wanna be ripped or have some pain they are dealing with.

As I said. In other words do as you want. Those who spent millions of dollars and years of their time complying with the rules and regulations are now SOL.

As are many investors, who invested billions into the cannabis industry only to see stock valuations whittled down (some to nothing).

Canopy Growth was at near $60 now it’s below $10, and who knows if it’ll ever recover.

I knew the fix was in when retired politicians started working with the FN bands on their pot programs.

It is not going to be the cash cow that local FN think it will be however. There are enough bands all competing with each other that the price will get driven down and the bands will probably wind up spending as much money dealing with the problems as they are making selling dope.

Yes, you just might be right. Cleanest play is leasing out production facilities, collecting rent and letting the leaseholder worry about everything else.

If you’re going to smoke you might as well do a little reconciliation at the same time?

Salt Spring is finally getting a legal store.

For a while we had three illegal ones. One of them closed because the landowner murdered his wife then killed himself (I think the spca is buying that building), one closed because the owner (Leaf / Platinum) stayed open during the application process and he was denied, now he’s making hot sauce. The third one is still open and recently added a second, more upscale sea can to the mix selling mostly cbd.

The new one is called Harvest Moon, and shares ownership and mall space with country grocery, and uptown liquor. Looks like they tapped the former LDB store manager to run things. Smart.

Do you know the hot sauce brand? Thanks.
