None of mum’s four direct neighbours live alone. All have at least one dog. Growing up, only one neighbour did.

It’s a thing now.

Don’t even get me started on the number of annoying spoiled unnecessary children.

I don't care what the reason is, no more ugly fencing. That whole area has already been made unappealing.

If the CoV makes changes that result in something/some place becoming less appealing, then Council knows they have done their job.

but it’s split rail isn’t that as good as nature or just split telephone pole?

I think that was always the intent…

The City of Victoria has begun installing a new fence between its largest off-leash dog park and a pedestrian pathway along the Dallas Road bluffs in a bid to reduce conflicts between off-leash dogs and pedestrians.

The split-rail fencing along the pathway between Cook Street and Clover Point is identical to the fencing that already lines the off-leash area beside Dallas. The work will also include new waste bins along the pedestrian pathway on the south side of the park and a new wood chip path inside the leash-optional area.

City spokesman Bill Eisenhauer said the $100,000 pilot project followed public feedback that better separation was needed between dogs playing in the off-leash area and other people using the park.

But passersby on Thursday afternoon taking advantage of a sunny day to get some exercise with their dogs or just taking a walk by the water were largely against the idea of fencing off the spot.

“There are just so few places places for people to take their dogs for a walk by the beach in Victoria,” said Gabrielle Ciceri, who was walking with her dog Romeo. “The dogs are already on the grass and now humans have to walk there with them and that ground gets muddy and it’s uneven.

“It’s frustrating. We all come down here to do this and it’s such a dog-friendly city otherwise.”

There are too many dogs in this city now, and too many dog owners who don’t know or care to go through rigorous dog training. We should be investing in more pedestrian infrastructure, for gosh sakes, and creating more access for people, so this initiative I can appreciate.

Mike would fit in perfectly with my neighbors :D

I walk along Dallas Rd probably every other day, along the path that people say is dangerous.  I've never had a negative encounter with a dog there, nor have I seen one.  That's not to say it can't/doesn't happen, but I think any problems there are blown out of proportion.

You’re an able bodied man in your prime.

For a senior, an uncontrolled dog running up to them can lead to a trip and fall, broken bones, and a bad injury. A fall to you or I is nothing, but it can be debilitating to someone with fragile bones or other health conditions.

We’ve lost compassion in our society. As progressive as we think we are, ableism has become so entrenched alongside progressivism that I feel like we’ve slipped back to the 1970s without recognizing it.

All you hear from people who don’t have control over their dog is “he’s friendly!!” screamed in your direction as the dog bolts at you.

Some people don’t want dogs jumping on them. Is that still ok, in our uber sensible ultra progressive society? Is it still ok to not have your clothes dirtied by a dog that isn’t properly trained by an unaware dog owner? Some things to think about, as more and more people get dogs, because it’s currently fashionable to have a 100lb K9 in a 1BR condo.

This is oddly similar use of language as the 'cars are 3000lb murder tanks' from the bike lobby.

I’m a dog person, for sure, but people are housing giant dogs in apartments now. I had a neighbour in my building with a giant German Shepard. He had to give it up after it grew up, it got so large that it could barely function.

You have to consider the right large dog for an apartment.  If you live in a shoebox, maybe get a Great Dane instead.

^ that's exactly right. Its not the size that is so relevant. Its the breed (and even then, individual dogs vary, just like humans).

Same again today. No parking spaces left. Picnic area empty. Also new barricaded footpath now empty, except for these cyclists. It appears #CoV is consistent in ridding the public from its spaces.

A large dog of any breed or temperament does not belong in an apartment. Sorry guys, but that to me is animal cruelty, and sometimes our wants are out of sync with an appropriate environment of an animal.

Living in Victoria is like being nibbled to death by ducks.  Every time you turn around there is some new social engineering project to make your life more irritating  and frustrating.  Clusters of ugly distracting signs, road obstructions, warnings, mazes of painted pathways, random curbs and bollards and on and on.  Nearly all are solutions looking for problems.  We don’t need any more fences on Dallas Road or anywhere else.  What we need are some people on council with at least a modicum of common sense.

Society doesn’t value common sense any more, so: fences.

That new bit of fencing is built with some of the worst and most ugly wood I've ever seen. I think it's been sitting at the parks yard on Cook St. for too long and is already deteriorating. Also dogs were already jumping back and forth over it, so I don't think it will be in the least effective. It's actually so unsightly down there, I doubt if we'll even go for a walk there any longer. The visual pollution is overwhelming - Dallas Road sucks. After sixty something years of walking there, to hell with it.
