So please explain to me why my property taxes keep going up.

It's called inflation and it's built into the capitalist system which depends on constant growth. Unless you want fixed interest rates and the elimination of "profit" the price for everything eventually rises. Corporations and the billionaires who control them, insist on ever-increasing piles of money in the form of "return on investments".

Oh, wait, you just wanted set up another union/lefty-bashing session? Sorry, carry on. I see Victoria Watcher has already piled on so you are good to go.

But what about rapid inflation in former Communist countries? How is that a symptom of capitalism when the country is socialist?

Venezuela’s recent hyper inflation is the latest example of a socialist country experiencing currency destabilization. Where/how does capitalism come into play in present-day Venezuela’s economic woes?

Know it all.

There is the slight chance that "Communist" countries may actually be oligarchies or tyrannies or plutocracies labeling themselves as Communist as a branding... and since authoritarian governments are not immune to corruption and bad economic policy (see the United States currently for some examples) that they might experience similar outcomes as capitalist societies...

Maybe.

I mean, there's a chance.

The current site is the best possible site. I can't believe they have already spent so much money and bungled this so badly and still haven't made any progress. This city Hall is comically incompetent

Just build on the current site as was already planned. Stop making it more complicated.

typical.

You would think that our "collaborative" Mayor would have thought that consultation would have been important before it was requested by the groups.

Should also note that if the Mayor's upcoming trips are approved, she will be out of town during the COTW meeting where the pool is discussed.

The North Park Neighbourhood Association is objecting to the proposed site at Central Middle School :  https://twitter.com/...thPark?lang=en

They have asked for an 'equity' approach to the pool replacement to keep the pool within 'walking distance' of North Park, Hillside-Quadra, and Burnside-Gorge; they contend that the city's "North Side" is poorer than its "South Side."  While this might be true in the aggregate, I think that- at the street level- there are many low-income people living on the "South Side" (James Bay, Fairfield etc) and many higher income people living on the North Side (Oaklands and the Selkirk Waterfront area have some higher end housing).

In any case, Central Middle School is within the boundaries of Fernwood and I'm sure that there are many people with low-to-moderate income in Fernwood so I'm not certain that their objections have merit...

It's the NPNA's fault that the CoV is exploring options away from the Central Park location. Their argument of a loss of green space is such hogwash. Of course the NPNA shooting itself in the foot isn't really surprising; they're not the sharpest tools in the shed.

Is the current location"walking distance" from Burnside-Gorge? I'd personally consider that area more around Tillicum/Gorge park area and according to Google Maps that's almost an hour walk. Even if I pull it right down to Douglas it's still 20 minutes and I don't imagine many people want to do that then work out then walk 20 minutes back or do the walk with children on these busy streets.

Tillicum/Gorge is served by Pearkes Arena near Tillicum Mall, so probably not a good example.  Dunedin to Crystal Pool is more like a 20 minute hoof right now, but moving to Central Middle School would bump it to closer to 45 minutes.

I'm just questioning why they mentioned the neighbourhood

when I wouldn't really consider it walking distance unless you just want to walk there and back.

It's walking distance from the most southerly portion of Burnside-Gorge, but when you're talking about a neighbourhood that is 2 km long and 1 km wide, there will be a huge discrepancy between what is walkable for a resident in Rock Bay versus Mayfair. I agree, it makes no sense to say you want the needs of Burnside-Gorge residents considered if your goal is to retain the rec centre in North Park.

The most central location (at least as the crow flies) would place the new pool at the southern tip of the Harris Green median at Pandora & Cook.

Capture.JPG

It would make for a very skinny design, but it would be about as equidistant as possible.  ;)

where do NPNA think this pool should go? they don't want it to leave the north park area, yet they are highly against the temporary loss of green space by building it behind the current location then returning the current location to greenspace once complete... they are against a move to central, the curling rink parking lot/space was a no go, moving it to the parking lot by  the arena has been fully shot down...and it sounds like the RAP parking lot is heading the same direction, there isn't a whole lot of large empty spaces big enough to build this pool... what's next down at beacon hill on the all weather fields on the douglas side? no wait they can't even figure out what to do about the checkers pavillion at the top of the hill!

I think that if you were to accurately represent of the NPNA it would be simply that they want to be consulted, something that doesn't appear to be in the City's playbook.

Vic News: Since early Monday morning firefighters sprayed over 4 million gallons of water onto the Plaza Hotel at 603 Pandora Ave.

Quote:

If you were a swimming-pool builder and a customer asked you to build a pool that would hold a million-gallons, then they had better have a big yard! You would need to build a pool about 267 feet long (almost as long as a football field), 50 feet wide, and 10 feet deep.

I could swear those are the specs for the proposed new Crystal Pool.

Well their hissy fit has now cost everyone a lot of money.  Yes, the CoV is ultimately responsible, but the NPRA was not helpful.  Anything further from NPRA needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
