Do my eyes deceive me or can you see these cranes from Begbie Street? The next time you're zipping by in your car try craning your neck in that direction (but just briefly enough so as not to be a road menace, because safety comes first). The cranes seem too close and too large. They appear to be right behind Hillside Mall. It's not quite three miles distance from there (from Begbie to University Heights), but I guess it's just very flat going up Shelbourne way.

 

edit: upon further review, I suppose the tallest crane must be about as tall as an ~18-story residential building?

Upon further further review, is there a crane anywhere else out Shelbourne way? Is there a crane at the McRae Ave project?

I wasn't crazy about the composition of your Lytton pic (the shadow of the utility pole in the foreground was a bit distracting) and thus I politely refrained from commenting. I considered mentioning it but I didn't want you to rush back there for a do-over on my account.

I wonder if in 10 years we’ll think to ourselves we under-built the project? With the municipality moving forward on an 18-storey tower right next door, it seems like a lost opportunity.

I bet when the time comes we'll see something closer to what you're advocating above whenever Hillside Mall decides to redevelop. It will be a smaller version IMO of the mega construction happening at Oakridge Mall in YVR, but I'd bet it will happen. And we already know the owner of Mayfair has medium-long term plans for some form of residential at Mayfair......
