That’s an incredible honour. Is there more to this, as in why she was chosen?

The honour of laying a wreath on behalf of the Government of Canada automatically goes to the highest-ranking official present.

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you.

Know it all.

Shame on Sportsnet for giving in to bullies. A very unfair and sad way for a Canadian icon to end his career. For saying immigrants should be wearing poppies, something 90% of Canadians would probably agree with

Cherry should have have been gone 10 years ago. The only shame is it took this long.

Cherry should have been gone years ago. This was just the last straw. I would guess that most Canadians are happy to see the back of his colourful jackets for good.

I think its not so much for what he said, most folks prob dont care but in light of the hypocrisy of the Liberals its an issue.

Where does it stop?

Our Charter states this

(bfreedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;

The charter is only relevant between the government and its citizens. If your boss is a company like Rogers and not the government, you bet they can fire you if they don't like what you say.

The same people cheering Don's removal are the same ones criticizing China and Russia for their crackdowns on free speech.  I guess that you probably won't get arrested here for saying something non-PC but you will lose your job, have your family harassed and your career will be over.

Get serious. We all know what he means when he says he "sees immigrants".

So he should lose his job because you interpret his comments in a way that he didn't state?

I am not defending the guy, but we all have seen how these issues progress. At first folks were fired for inappropriate touching and then they started being fired because they looked at someone the wrong way, stood to close to them or made someone feel uncomfortable because they talked to them.

Next time you are giving a talk at UVIC you want to lose your job because someone in the audience interpreted what you said incorrectly?

BTW, suggesting that Don is racist because he is white and old makes you racist doesn't it?!

If Cherry wanted to make a point, that everyone should be wearing poppies to honour our war dead and our veterans, that would have been fine. The fact that he specifically targeted newcomers and refugees is what is wrong. It's especially hurtful when we are about to mark Remembrance Day, a day when so many Canadians died, 'old stock' and recent immigrants.

Well I hate to break it to you people but this is what was actually said:

“You people… you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,” he said. “These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”

Even if he did target recent immigrants why is that wrong exactly? Are we only allowed to have wArm and fuzzy opinions about immigrants? Immigrants can do no wrong? Are they above criticism of any kind?

Hard to feel bad for Don though. He is 85 and probably thinking it is about time to hang up the skates anyways. Now he will be paid millions to quietly go away and he will be a hero to millions of people who believe in speaking truth to power.
