I don’t think skytrain should be extended to the ferry terminal. that route from river rock to the ferry could be first in line for a self driving tram-bus though.

It should be extended to Ladner, say, by 2025 or so, the crossing part built with the new tunnel. From there, eventually a loop over to King George, though that's a couple decades off probably. A express bus system between the ferry and Ladner is easy with one stop around Tsawassen Mills.

I agree. The new tunnel should incorporate rail with a line down to Ladner. That would also negate a terminal at YVR.

Would it?  A passenger-only terminal at YVR would still be mighty useful for people coming from Nanaimo or anywhere else north of the Malahat; it just wouldn't need to service Swartz Bay.

if the passenger only ferry also means more frequent sailings that’s a bonus attraction too. every 30 minutes or better then you don’t even really need to time your terminal arrival either. you miss one your maximum wait is 30 minutes.

is it odd that there are dozens of car ferry sailings per day to the mainland but our only ferry link to Seattle is a passenger ferry?

I guess what I’m thinking is if Victoria foot passengers have their transit taken care of at Ladner they might be quite content. Can’t speak for Nanaimo, but is Nanaimo’s draw even big enough for such an investment?

From the new foot passenger terminal you’d need to travel a heck of a distance to Templeton station (looks like 5-6km at least, but if they build the terminal at the end of the jetty add another 3.5 or 4km.

Ladner to Bridgeport on the bus is only another 15 minutes or so, and the bus has the advantage of using priority lanes on the highway so there's minimal delay at rush hour. The cost to bring Skytrain to Ladner would be staggering, there's basically no density & it would probably take just as long as the bus. It's a worse idea than LRT in Victoria.

Tunnel is a loooong way off, MoTI and Metro Van want to do public consultation on the proposals first. The rail connection would also be tricky, as you can pretty much rule out a Skytrain extension and instead hope for an LRT. There's not really much space to put the thing, unless you did it in the highway right of way.

Why can't it just entend Canada Line? Highway right of way, then down in the middle or one side of the new tunnel?

This is all so dumb though; the new bridge would be well under construction by now if the NDP had left it alone.

Slight change of topic, does anyone know where ( or name of ) the heavy carrier vessel bringing the new Island Class ferry to Point Hope from the ship yard in Romania. Can't find it on Marine Traffic and BC ferries says the first of 4 ferries should have arrived at Point Hope in Victoria " Mid Oct 2019 "

Been by Point Hope often and nothing the size of a 85 meter ferry is there being retrofit for BC waters.....

Thanks.

According to the most recent project update by BCF in September they are being delivered on their own keel I believe and not on a transport ship. The deliveries have also been delayed..

in the video you'll see the distinctly romanian technique of launching it.  it's called multi barbati simultan cu topoare si manete lungi galbene.  you didn't get that in the polish shipyard for the last ones.

There are some phenomenal videos of the new vessels on Damen's Facebook page: https://www.facebook...hipyardsGalati/. But in the videos, it's clear the ships are still over there.

Looks like two of them ready to go in the FaceBook video there.

Saanich news reporting that the first of the new ferries are expected to arrive in Victoria in January 2020, and a revised total of 6 vessels ordered from Damen. https://www.saanichn...ssels-to-fleet/

The third and fourth vessels will service the Campbell River-Quadra Island route and the last two will serve the Nanaimo Harbour-Gabriola Island route by 2022.

BC Ferries said replacing one larger ship with two smaller vessels will give customers more frequent service, increased passenger capacity per hour, reduced vehicle line-ups, improved safety and reduced congestion on local roads. The vessels will have the capacity to carry at least 47 vehicles and up to 300 to 450 passengers and crew depending on configuration.

somebody real important must live on gabriola island among those 4000 people for them to be so spoiled by ferry service.

The Island Class vessel is a battery-powered ferry and when electric charging technology becomes advanced enough to make electricity available in the quantities needed, BC Ferries said it will operate the new ships as completely electric ferries using clean energy.

also the propulsion system is not being properly explained here.  missing from the article is the fact they are diesel-powered and that the current onboard batteries don't really do much of the job.  they are really more like the equivalent of your deep-cycle rv batteries.
