The Aurora left the inner harbour this morning under its own power.

if it's just to support a light bulb it seems like overkill.

Clearly its a spoiler to make it go faster.

Q: What is near the very top of the ferries, it appears to serve no purpose?
A: Former _______________.
I edited that comment on advice of my crack legal team. It used to name a former executive who was let go with a huge severance.

Surely it's not something as basic as a height gauge, is it? As in, if you're too tall to get under this, put it in reverse right now before you try to go under the deck...

Like the 11foot8 bridge barrier?
classic.
The train trestle prominently featured in all the videos here has earned a reputation for its unrelenting enforcement of the laws of physics. If your vehicle is taller than 11 feet and 8 inches, and you challenge this bridge, you might find footage of your experience on this website

I would guess its to improve the structural rigidity of the hull.

This is my thought as well.

Maybe it's rigidity or maybe it's just clearance gauges. Other similar ferry designs from the same shipbuilder feature thin pipe-style structures in the same position that couldn't possibly provide structural support.
BTW, these two ferries are certainly the poster children for the DAMEN ROAD FERRY 8117 E3. Were these the first of this model built?

Pads are all expected to be in place by this spring, the company said today.
B.C. Ferries expects that debit will be accepted at terminals between Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver late this month, B.C. Ferries said.
Minor terminals are getting the new pads first.
B.C. Ferries anticipates ticketing will take less time for customers using the tap and pay option for purchases of less than $100 (the tap limit).
Customers had been asking for the ability to use debit to pay for fares, B.C. Ferries said.
“B.C. Ferries waited to install debit to ensure tap capability was available to help process transactions,” says a statement from the company.

ironically they waited for tap technology and when it came now some credit card sometimes have pin type-in requirements.

it's also interesting that with new banking apps you can literally turn on and off your credit card approval as you please.
so some people will get to the toll booth and try to pay forgetting they have turned off their card. so they will take time to reactivate it.
bc ferries always insisted time was the reason they never allowed debit. always a dubious claim.

Not like entering in your PIN takes a long time.....

Not like entering in your PIN takes a long time.....
who knows.
march 2019:
BC Ferries has no plans to implement debit for vehicle ticket payments
Ferry-takers can now use their debit card just about anywhere on BC Ferries – except to pay for their vehicle ticket.
Deborah Marshall, spokesperson for BC Ferries, said debit cards are not accepted at vehicle ticket booths because “it would slow down the point-of-sale with customers having to input their PINs (personal identification numbers).”
https://www.vicnews....icket-payments/
why slowing down vehicle ticket sales was any different than the then-new policy allowing walk-ons to use debit (and slowing down sales there) is a mystery.
