Vehicle Stop Leads to Firearms Arrest

On Wednesday March 27, 2019 at about 2:30 in the morning, one of our officers stopped a motorhome that was being driven excessively slow on Vernon Avenue, raising concerns about the driver’s wellbeing. Once stopped, the driver was investigated for impaired driving which led officers to search the motorhome. It was during this search that two firearms were found, one of which was loaded. And on closer inspection, it was also found to have been stolen from Sooke back in 1985.

The driver, a 57 year old Saanich man, is well known to police and is currently on a court order prohibiting him from possessing firearms. He now faces several new firearms charges including possession of a loaded firearm, possession of both a restricted and prohibited firearm in a vehicle, unauthorized possession of a restricted and prohibited firearm, and unsafe transport of these firearms, along with a charge of failing to comply with his court order. He appeared before the Courts later that day and has been remanded in custody.

“This vehicle stop highlights the excellent proactive work our officers do, despite the inherent unknown risks they face in doing so“ said Sgt. Julie Fast, Public Information Officer for Saanich Police.

he appeared in the morning and then he plead guilty to all charges yesterday afternoon and was sentenced to time served (one day - his time from arrest at 2:30 am until his 4 pm sentencing) plus probation 3-5 years and restrictions and dna sampling and was then released with the matter over by dinner time.

I think the best part of the story is the discovery of a firearm stolen from Sooke.

In 1985!

Rather a buzz kill after the "excellent proactive work our officers do".

seriously hurt? what was the nature of the assault? are the victims in hospital?

me thinks the police are using extra words here for effect. non life threatening and serious.

then not explaining further. local media does no better either just rewriting the press release.

surely the nightclub has surveillance video. let’s see it.

Human remains recovered from Glen Lake

On March 31st 2019 at approximately 4:45 pm, the West Shore RCMP attended Glen Lake in Langford.
Officers were advised that human remains had been discovered in the lake by a member of the public.

With the assistance of the View Royal Fire Department the body of a male was recovered. Police have since identified the human remains as being missing person, Joshua BENNETT.

Joshua BENNETT’s family has been notified. Our deepest sympathies are with them at this time. This file is still under investigation. Although there were no obvious signs of foul play, investigators continue to work alongside the BC Coroners Service to determine what caused Joshua BENNETT’s death, said Cst. Nancy SAGGAR, Media Relations Officer for the West Shore RCMP.

there was a fair amount of media coverage on his disappearance including family members protesting outside the police detachment demanding more information.

Family of missing Langford man Joshua Bennett demand more from RCMP, ask public for tips

also family concerns about criminality:

https://www.timescol...mped-1.23670248

Bennett, 31, was recently in touch with people connected to drugs and criminality, said his mother, Marlo Eveleigh. That has her worried that Bennett might have owed money to someone or found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

in the end he was found really only a few hundred metres from where he was last seen.

Very odd how it took this long to discover the body. It's not a big lake, it doesn't have currents, and houses encircle the entire lake.

I'm not totally fluent on the science, but I believe a dead body will sink for 1-2 weeks until gasses build up and replace the water that initially fills the lungs. Only then will it rise to the surface. So based on the timing of this find in relation to him going missing, it's plausible that the body could have been underwater the entire time.

Man sexually assaulted at Thetis Lake

At approximately 7:20 pm On April 1st 2019 the West Shore RCMP received a call from a man who reported he was sexually assaulted while at Thetis Lake Park in View Royal.

The victim was out for a jog around the lake when he encountered another male (the suspect), on a part of the trail. The victim moved over to allow the suspect to pass him. The suspect then got closer to the victim and grabbed the victims genitals before walking away.

This is a disturbing crime. The victim was obviously in shock but was able to record the suspect on his cell phone as he was walking away. The recording assisted police in identifying the suspect who has since been arrested for sexual assault. No other reports of sexual assault of this nature have been reported to police, said Cst. Nancy SAGGAR, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer.

If you were witness to this incident please call the West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264, or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

double standard. they felt they had to reinforce it due to the genders.

what’s amazing is with no suspect identified they presumed the suspect’s gender.

Agreed. That's how it read to me as well.

...what’s amazing is with no suspect identified they presumed the suspect’s gender.

I imagine the victim would have identified the suspect as male.

but genders do not have certain appearances. only a person can decide their own gender. not others.

Perhaps the suspect identified his/her/their gender identity to the victim.
