What if it was someone out jogging instead of a cop? The level of violence lately is sickening. Now the latest Cecelia ravine incident? I want to weep.

One Arrested After Gasoline Poured On Tent, Occupants Threatened

Victoria, BC – Patrol officers arrested a man and are seeking additional witnesses after a suspect poured gasoline on an occupied tent in Cecelia Ravine Park and threatened to set it on fire this morning.

At 8:30 a.m. this morning Patrol officers were called to Cecelia Ravine Park in the 400-block of Burnside Road for a report that a man had poured gasoline on an occupied tent and threatened to light it on fire while holding a blow torch. The tent was occupied by a woman and her dog at the time of the incident.

Patrol officers attended and located the suspect in Cecelia Ravine Park. Officers arrested the man for assault with a weapon, mischief, and uttering threats. No one was injured. The suspect was transported to cells at VicPD where he was held to await court.

This incident is believed to be related to a report earlier this morning, at approximately 6:30 a.m., when officers were called to the same area of the park for a report that a man was struck by a bat with spikes on it. Officers attended to that incident and arrested a man for assault with a weapon, who was transported to cells and released with a court date and conditions. The victim was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, cleared medically, and then returned to the park where he is believed to have become the suspect in the second incident.

This incident is still under investigation. If you have information about this incident and have not spoken to officers, please call our Report Desk and (250) 995-7654, extension 1. To report what you know anonymously, please call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

A man swinging a baton is attempting to rob people using ATMs on Douglas at Fort. His tactic is to ask you to deposit a cheque for him that he’ll write in the person’s name. Failing that he’ll demand money while intimidating victims with a baton.

Police know. I’m looking forward to a press release about his arrest and immediate release.

I guess the good news for the mayor and council is that with so many violent crimes now driving businesses and residents out of the downtown core, it will free up buildings for BC Housing to acquire and convert to more shelters. They never told us that was the way of getting everyone off the street by month end.

If we don't tell the (hopefully still coming) tourists, would it be considered bait & switch?

Come for sightseeing and shopping, but (oops) it's not the sightseeing and shopping you thought (sucker)!

Tourism industry vs poverty industry, and the winner is?

^ Don't worry, lots of us are making sure that tourists know. That is the one big piece of leverage we still have to force behavioral change. Once the tourists start voluntarily staying away then the "business leaders" who are still sucking up to Helps will change their tunes.
