well interview those arrested and ask them their side of the story then.

Or go to the Caledonia Street blockade and ask those there.

It’s very clear the other side of this story was never presented. Except but those few words in the CHEK story.

Who says those arrested want to be interviewed? And on what grounds do people on Caledonia speak for the people who were arrested, especially on the topic of ethnicity?

The narrative from the protestors is that the two incidents (Manak aggravated assault and VicPD HQ protest) had no connection/organization between the parties. The immediate protest was a response to the arrests, according to those at the protest.

Sounds like we need to redefine what people who contribute written content to independent (not accredited) news agencies are called, then, because journalist in the traditional sense isn’t it.

What I mean is that accredited news agencies have been taken over (or maybe always were) activists/politically motivated. The best solution is to maintain a wide variety of voices from all sides, and people have to read through it all and make their decisions. Of course, the drawback is that it also allows a bunch of nut cases to be out there, but I think it’s worth it. Another drawback is that it has become a much more complex job for regular people to figure out what is true or not, and most don’t want to invest the time. However, this is partly why we are in the mess we are in now with the mainstream media.

Who says those arrested want to be interviewed?

very few people will resist commenting when presented with a microphone and/or camera.  that's clear.

I would disagree. How many people respond to media when leaving a police station, or a courthouse? If anyone talks to media, it might be their lawyer.

There is a distrust and dislike or corporate media among the groups we feel are responsible for the attack, remember.

The family was dismayed when they returned home to see Victoria Police Department’s press release, and subsequent media coverage, focused not on that important work, but on the liquid being poured on the police chief.

The media controls its coverage. VicPD does not require Vic News to publish a quota of crime reports. Vic News chose its coverage for the day, and chose every article it ran that day. The same holds true for the rest of the accredited media.

And take note, that for such a large article (for VN), there is no byline. It’s anonymous.

So what’s the issue here? What’s at the crux of this? Because all I’m seeing is frustration that VicPD has removed the media as its gatekeeper of information and now directly publishes police news to the public without having the media do it for them. Five years ago the media would attend press briefings for the most part, and air what they wanted from those meetings.

Rob Germain of CHEK didn’t mince words in response to Tim Ford’s accusations:

“How dare you attack the integrity of reporters of @CHEK_News, @CTVNewsVI and @timescolonist who face threats regularly just for doing their job. You are sowing further distrust and putting them in more danger by suggesting they are shilling for the police, which is garbage.”

https://twitter.com/...1839042560?s=21

The accredited media is more tolerant than ever of self-made journos, so to see this reaction from Germain clearly a nerve has been struck.

I'm sure that, as Ford, feels some media are shills for VicPD, there are many people who see him, Capital Daily, etc not as objective journalists but rather spokespeople for other local groups and politicians.

its the same that happened on Canada day... the day started with a memorial downtown for all the lost and missing children found (and yet to be found) buried on the grounds of former residential schools.. there were many ceremonies and speakers all coming together to support eachother and mourn... and in the end a bunch of angry protesters tore down a statue and that is all the media talked about....

i think it's time to be angry at the protesters... and allow those memorials to happen without trying to twist them for personal gain as a way to attack police or the whole aspect of colonization..

The original description was …

“The suspect is described as a Black man, 20-30 years old, medium build, 5’8” to 5’11” tall, wearing a black skater-style hat, a long-sleeved shirt, black pants, and a dark coloured backpack.”

Turns out the Black man was much older.

Swing and a miss.

This is straight out of a horror movie. A family moved into an apartment building home to a sex offender. He murders the wife and child, inside his unit. This happened in Hinton, Alberta, east of the BC border half-way to Edmonton.

Major was the subject of a public warning when he was released into the Edmonton community in 2017.

At the time, the Edmonton Police Service said he would be living in the Edmonton area. Police said they had reasonable grounds to believe Major would commit another sexual offence against a female, including children, while in the community.

At the time, media outlets in Edmonton reported that he was under a number of court-ordered conditions including a curfew, restrictions on his access to children and a ban on leaving Edmonton without permission from his supervisor.

He didn't have to follow any conditions since July 2020, RCMP said.

McConnell said he, his wife and their son had recently moved into the apartment building and had no idea of Major's criminal history.

Makes one wonder what a fellow has to do to be charged with FIRST degree murder.

not victim blaming.

but even with an extensive interview with the husband the topic of how they came to be in his apartment unit was never covered? that’s what many will be asking.

Johnathan Pocetti Arrested

Date: Wednesday, September 22, 2021 - Files: VicPD #21-36327, CSPS #21-2785

Victoria, BC – Johnathan Pocetti, who was sought by officers after a series of incidents across Greater Victoria, was taken into custody last night.

Officers with the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT), VicPD’s Strike Force, Community Services Division (CSD), Patrol and Investigative Services Division worked with officers from across the region including the Central Saanich Police Service, West Shore RCMP and the Saanich Police Department in efforts to locate Jonathan Pocetti and arrest him safely.

Just before 10 p.m. last night, GVERT officers conducted a high-risk vehicle arrest at the intersection of Bay and Blanshard Streets. During the arrest a distraction device was used, which made a loud “booming” sound. Jonathan Pocetti was taken into custody and transported to VicPD cells.

Johnathan Pocetti was wanted on several outstanding warrants related to ongoing Central Saanich Police Service and VicPD investigations.

Central Saanich Police Service File 21-2785

Johnathan Pocetti was wanted on warrants for assaulting a police officer with a weapon, flight from police, dangerous operation of vehicle and mischief to property over $5,000 after an August 31st incident. In that incident, Pocetti allegedly drove a truck onto the hood of a police vehicle when a Central Saanich Police Service officer attempted to stop him at a gas station in the 6700-block of West Saanich Road. He then fled the scene in the vehicle.

 VicPD File 21-36327

Johnathan Pocetti was also wanted after a September 5th incident in which he allegedly attempted to ram a woman and her two friends with his vehicle while they were on foot in Dallas Road and Linden Street area. This ramming attempts was followed by an attempt to assault one of the individuals with a weapon. He fled the scene in a vehicle.

“This arrest is a great example of collaboration with investigators from multiple agencies and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team to ensure public safety,” Central Saanich Police Chief Ian Lawson said. “We are grateful our officer was not physically injured on August 31st, and we are relieved the suspect was taken into custody without incident last night.”

“This man was allegedly involved in a series of dangerous incidents in which a police officer and members of the public narrowly avoided harm,” VicPD Chief Del Manak said. “I am proud of the work all of our officers did as we worked with regional partners to investigate the incidents and identify, locate and ultimately arrest the suspect.”

Johnathan Pocetti was held for court.
