That's a very short 8 storeys.

It depends upon your point of view. East side or West side.

East side or West side.
Among VV forumers the longstanding eastside/westside feud is almost as bitter as the longstanding southside/northside feud.

^For the record, I'm not suggesting those two feuds were anywhere near as bitter as the longstanding feud between south central forumers and upper west side forumers.

I saw a tag in downtown today, with Blood in red, Crip in blue, one above the other. I think we're making progress.

That short stretch of waterfront from the JSB to Canoe is like a textbook example of the right way to do things. The new buildings are all "small footprint" rather than monotonous longscrapers; there's much variation in the architectural styles and yet the established built form of the district has nevertheless been emphasized rather than violated and/or subverted; not to mention the outstanding repurposing/renovation of heritage buildings like the Janion and the city light building.

It really should cause one to wonder how/why we shifted from that old enthusiasm which ended up producing so many good things on the north side of the JSB to the more recent "no way in hell" posturing re: Northern Junk's revival. FYI: I've never really considered exactly how much new construction there is in the Canoe pub building. Maybe a fair bit more than I realized.

Marine pub complex gets nod for former City Light building
"I'm really excited about the project," heritage planner Steve Barber said.
"The building has a lot of wonderful history. It was built in 1894 as a generating station for the electric street light system and after that it was used for many years as a storage facility. We hope the renovation of the old building and construction of the new one will stimulate a lot more interest in the area."
"We hope it will extend the flavor of old town and focus more interest on that waterfront area. Eventually we are hoping to have a waterfront walkway that will link the Causeway area all the way along the waterfront up at Capital Iron."
A new brick building will be built along the northerly edge of the federally owned foreshore land to provide additional commercial leaseable space and viewing decks and there will be a through-building pedestrian access to the waterfront walkways.

Hopefully the vison in 2024 would be to extend the walkway all the way to whatever the FN decide to build on the Rock Bay lands - Barber's quote is now 36 years old so hopefully the vision and the (eventual) reality today won't remain rooted in a four-decade old idea......

In 36 years the waterfront walkway has sort of reached just beyond the JSB (the NJ section notwithstanding). Perhaps by the late 21st century it may even progress a hundred meters or so further. I am fairly certain I won't live to see it reach Rock Bay.
