Who is it for, exactly, if the campers are vowing not to use it?

Is an emergency entirely of Council's making actually an emergency?

Is an emergency entirely of Council's making actually an emergency?

Hmmm...that’s something like the tree falling in the forest thing.

I drove by there this morning and no signs of emergency were evident.  All quiet, no signs of life except for a car parked within the enclosure, hood up, a light blinking.  The size of the tent somewhat undercuts the “community gathering” notion.  If Covid protocols are observed no more than three people could occupy it at the same time.

Among other things that would certainly limit its usefulness as a “warming” place too.  Assume about 120 campers, perhaps half of whom wish to be warmed.  Let’s say it takes about an hour to warm up.  So 60 people, going in groups of three for an hour at a time would fill the tent for at least 20 hours a day.  Hopefully they could organize themselves accordingly and precisely estimate when they needed to be warmed!

Needless to say, this is all nonsense.  If there’s no emergency we don’t need the tent.  If there is the tent is pitifully inadequate.  In reality it’s just a function of activists making a statement and politicians scrambling to do anything to pretend they’re addressing the problem.  What they won’t do, of course, is require a measure of personal responsibility on the part of those getting the handouts.

Lisa Helps said on CHEK that if the addition of this tent were meant to be permanent, they would have consulted thoroughly. But this is an "emergency" situation.

Good for them then that the residents were spared lengthy useless consultations. Helps does what she wants no matter what the consultations say.

This was permitted as a patio for the red cedar cafe under the “build back” program - but the cafe is on Johnson street? What is this madness.

It was. Now it’s operating out of the $150,000 kitchen the Fol Epi owner built at Paul’s, and out of Red’s Cafe that closed at the Comfort Inn on Blanshard.

Comrade Isitt's perfect transfer from private ownership to socialist enterprise.

Matt.

Kind of adds insult to injury when the public funds that were supposed to help businesses and downtown recover from COVID go towards catering to the same people that made things as bad as they are leading to a need for « building back » .

Here's Mr Eisenhauer's response to my questions about why we gather budget feedback the way we do. I've included the original email, for clarity, and Councillor Isitt's punt:

(Long answer to a short question.)

"Hi S,

Thank you for your question to give me the opportunity to explain our engagement activities.

As a City, Victoria’s strives to be inclusive in our engagement practices. There are many reasons why someone who resides in another community may want to provide feedback on a City of Victoria project. A person who lives elsewhere may own property or own, run or work in one of our many small businesses here, among other reasons why they may have a keen interest in the way the Capital City is run.

It’s also important to note, and we are clear in our communications about this when presenting results, that online surveys by the very nature of their design are not scientifically representative. They provide information and insights about the views of the people who chose to participate in the survey. This is not dissimilar to other types of public input or town hall type engagement sessions. And surveys are just one means by which we gather public input and feedback. Other engagement activities may also include open houses (all done virtual right now), workshops, tours, forums, town halls, presentations and design charettes, as well as collaboration with advisory groups, all depending on the needs and scope of the project.

That said, what we continue to see is that by far the vast majority of people who participate in our surveys and engagement activities reside in the City of Victoria, and those who indicate they reside outside the city indicate that they live in municipalities within the Capital Region. We don’t tend to see many survey respondents who live outside of Vancouver Island, across Canada or from other countries.

Best regards,

-Bill

Councillor Isitt,

I hope this note finds you and your family well and safe.

I'm writing to clarify some comments I heard about our budget "feedback" process because I'm not sure I understood what's been happening, and for how long.

  • Is it true that someone can file a comment into our feedback portal, identify themselves as not living in Victoria and still be included?
  • Is it true that someone from Halifax, Israel, Saanich, Peru, Moscow could claim to be from Victoria and be included?
  • Why do we allow this to happen?

Sincerely,"

she seems to enjoy putting things in an "emergency situation" so she doesn't have to consult with anyone... like shutting down streets, removing parking, blocking roads....spending money like there's an endless supply of it...

"I believe it's important for us, obviously, to be sitting at the table and the agenda that is brought before us. It is incumbent of us to be prepared with the documents in front of us to sit at this table and deliberate. I find it quite offensive, really, to our citizens and the voters who have put us here, that they are now calling into radio talk shows and sharing photographs of councillors who are meant to be at this table, in this meeting, and yet are wandering around in the Cook Street neighbourhood, and I wonder if there is any rules in order of people joining remotely that they actually be focused on this meeting, and now doing other work. I cannot understand how you can be wandering around this city and be in tuned with this council meeting:" Stephen Andrew.

Andrew was referring to Isitt being spotted at the Cook Street care tent during the council meeting. Photographs of him were taken there, during the council meeting.

Isitt responds immediately thereafter. "There has been issues with establishing systems with the community care tent on Cook Street."

Then I recommend that Comrade Isitt take a leave (without pay) from Council and make the care tent his full time responsibility.

I saw Shea Perkins complaining that some of the stuff in the tent wasn't up to code (mattresses, etc.). I guess Benny went to check it out. In the photos  he appears to be standing next to a large truck with something on it which I can't make out.  (on Adam Stirling's twitter).
