We Have a Tripledemic. Not of Disease, But of Fear.

Getting sick sometimes is the price of returning to normal. Dr. Vinay Prasad thinks it’s more than worth it.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Friday announced plans to downgrade the legal status of COVID-19 to the equivalent of seasonal influenza in the spring, a move that would further relax mask wearing and other preventive measures as the country seeks to return to normalcy.

BC Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provided a message in regard to the efficacy of masking to prevent the spread of respiratory illness, causing a whirlwind of outrage on social media.

She addressed the matter Friday afternoon while providing a public health update with Health Minister Adrian Dix.

“Everybody wearing masks is not going to make a tremendous difference in the transmission of these viruses because we transmit them in those situations, when we are at home, when we are with friends, when we are doing social things that are important in our lives, where we don’t wear masks and it still allows those viruses to transmit,” said Henry.

This might be the most intelligent thing she has said in the past 3 years.

maybe because people aren't physically distancing also?

she also said

“So as we get back into our regular activities it is important to take measures to protect ourselves and others from respiratory viruses and other infections. First and foremost, getting vaccinated, get that booster dose if you haven’t already,” said Henry.

I recall the mental twisting to explain why it was ok to sit at a bar without a mask and share bathrooms with dozens of strangers, but how it wasn't ok to sit in your friend's basement without a mask.

i have no idea when that was the case? at the height of the lockdown anyway bars were either closed entirely or open at severely reduced capacity so i don't know when people would have shared bathrooms with "dozens of strangers". we were always supposed to keep a 2m distance from others or bubble together in small numbers.

all those quotes were from different times, even early march 2020 before the lockdown started & when she definitely would have had different amounts of information. i don't know why that's supposed to be evidence of... hypocrisy? indecisiveness? is that what that clip is trying to say? getting back to the western standard thing that was taken out of context i don't think it takes an MD to see that using masks by themselves will be less effective at preventing the spread than masks in combination with physical distancing & vaccination. today more people have had their shots & boosters and more is known about treatment so while it hasn't gone away there's much less risk of having to turn the sofa & our stadiums into field hospitals which governments were trying to avoid all along.

PPE is always the last resort, if you need PPE you’ve already screwed up everything before it. Remember when bar patrons were two meters apart and/or separated by a barrier?

Isn’t it abundantly clear that masking and hiding from the virus just lead to the big spike in flu this year? It didn’t work.
