Begbie doesn't sound that great in retrospect either.
in 1980 UVic named a building after Begbie. did we really discover new things about him since then? he died in 1894.

You mean the "hangin' judge" who ordered the hanging of 5 FN chiefs which Trudeau apologized for?!

I’m not so sure it’s “scary”.
“British Columbia” would be a better place to start with a name change though.
Canadian Columbia sounds better.
Seriously though. How about “Green Coas
I think it's scary personally.
I'm not one who was taught much of history. Elementary school alone was being taught of Aboriginals and the explorers. With each grade it was wash, rinse, repeat on the same subjects. I learned nothing else of Canadian history at all from our fine education system. I knew more about American history entering junior high school than of our own. Partly due to this I don't know who Trutch is.
But in my personal opinion I find what I linked to scary. If I've learned anything about council and they had their way, renaming streets would be just the start. Residential schools might be the extra coal they need to add to fuel their sanitisation express train.

The Breaker has released some information on the Kamloops "findings". https://thebreaker.n...amloops-dozier/
What does the evidence look like and who did the work?
The Tk’emlups have not answered those questions. Casimir said the findings would be released later this month. Meanwhile, the RCMP and B.C. Coroners Service said they await the Tk’emlups direction on next steps.
In that May 27 announcement, Casimir said the band was thankful for the Pathway to Healing grant to undertake the work.
The Department of Canadian Heritage told theBreaker.news that the 2020 grant was worth $40,000 and awarded under the title Paths to Healing. It was one of 200 projects funded in a $7 million, 2019-announced program to commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools.
The Tk’emlups application to Canadian Heritage said Paths to Healing would “recognize and remember those who passed away, endured, or suffered the intergenerational impacts of attending” Kamloops Indian Residential School, which the Roman Catholic Church operated from 1893 to 1978.
The project envisioned a permanent memorial site, park benches, indigenous plants and paths within the Secwépemc Museum and Heritage Park, in addition to a cairn-building ceremony and orange shirt day activities.

^ To boil it down for you, the Breaker investigation revealed that the Kamloops FN never received a grant to do the GPR. Either they used grant money for a different project or they never did the survey using grant money as they claimed.

Teacher Ki Louie says it felt good when the Central Kootenay school he's working at finally ditched its colonial name in the interests of reconciliation.
Last Friday, the former Prince Charles Secondary School in Creston, B.C., held a ceremony to remove the royal family member's name from its exterior signage — just three days after the Kootenay Lake School District voted unanimously to order the deletion.
School District 8 will temporarily refer to the school as Creston Valley Secondary School. Meanwhile, district staff will look at a process for a permanent name change, according to the school board's resolution last Tuesday.

^ But 3x the monetary ask from the Government.
I think we have already established that a typical grave in the 1800's was marked with a cross that rotted after a few decades.
I don't know how surprising it is then to find 'unmarked graves' in a communal cemetery that was there 20 years before the residential school even opened. What did they think was in the 2/3 rds of the cemetery that didn't have headstones?

also where did they think the missing children went? if not into the ground?
Thanks to google, here is the real story. Obviously the MSM can't search properly.
https://saskatoon.ct...raves-1.5379492
Highlights
The search at the Sasktoon cemetery was done earlier in the year, not started in May as the media reported.
There was erosion at the cemetery over the years and bodies were moved but the graves not marked.
The City knew at the time that about 200 graves were unaccounted for and the purpose the scan by students was to locate them.
