Island Health top doctor says they were caught ‘totally unawares’ by lack of isolation spots

In a media availability on Friday, CMHO Dr. Richard Stanwick said the spaces that would have previously been used as COVID isolation spots for unhoused people have been "repurposed by the hotel industry into rooms for paying tourist guests." Responding to reports of people living in tents with COVID having to pack up their tent and move elsewhere during the day, he added that even if 24/7 camping were still allowed in Victoria, a tent is not an adequate place to self-isolate. Island Health is currently seeking places where COVID-positive individuals can safely stay.

who is still in tents? I thought we solved homelessness.

I though there were plenty of empty rooms in the hotels we bought ?

Capital Daily is propaganda, not news.

Stanwick is just another tool of the poverty industry. Hotel rooms have not and never will be "repurposed" for paying guests; they have been repurposed as "temporary" shelter for the hordes of homeless who continue to flock here to get in on the freebies. The very definition of a hotel is "an establishment providing accommodations, meals, and other services for travelers and tourists. That such an erroneous narrative is being espoused by a public official, shows just how far we have fallen into a 1984 scenario, from which we may never recover.

Guess the one day closure did not send the message.

Victoria police are asking the public to avoid the 900-block of Pandora Avenue while several officers respond to a “police incident.”

The block is closed to traffic, VicPD said in a tweet at 8:50 a.m.

About nine Victoria police cruisers are on scene in the 900-block of Pandora Avenue Monday (Sept. 27) morning, as they attend to an incident in the area.

Police have yet to disclose the nature of the incident.

An onlooker at the scene told Black Press Media they saw the Victoria Police Department pursuing a black car that struck an officer positioned ahead of the chase. The suspect then collided with a dumpster.

BC Housing is getting ready to submit a rezoning application with the City of Victoria for its Russell Street shelter. The shelter will be refurbished from a warehouse into residences as part of the ~$9.4 million purchase of the property earlier this year.

Adequate isolation spaces are needed to help fight a COVID-19 outbreak among Greater Victoria’s underserved population.

Although it could not disclose an exact number, Island Health confirmed an outbreak of COVID-19 among Greater Victoria’s underserved population. The outbreak was the subject of a press conference Friday, Sept. 24, hosted by medical health officers Dr. Richard Stanwick and Dr. Dee Hoyano.

how are they “underserved”? they get more government largess than any population.

is this a new label the left has come up with?

Unvaccinated individuals are 12 times more likely to contract the virus, 36 times more likely to die from it and 60 times more likely to require hospitalization, Stanwick said.

^ those are also bald-faced lies.

Between June 12 and Sept. 3, the department responded to 2,701 calls for service to these facilities. In comparison, it responded to 973 calls for the entire municipality of Esquimalt.

remember the housing was supposed to DECREASE policing costs?

That's 32 calls/day, or one every 45 minutes each day.

BC Housing says that’ll decrease “as they settle in”.

Lets do some quick math IGNORING the cost of policing and health services. 225 Russell St, as an example cost $11M to purchase and renovate. Operating costs are estimated to be $2M a year. It will house a maximum of 40 people which probably means 30-35 given that most supportive housing units do not run at capacity. Even using minimalist depreciation, the annual cost per resident is going to be close to $60K. Now add back in policing and health services and you are likely close to $100K.

We are not saving any money in fact it is costing far more. Now I am not arguing against spending money to help people, just the BS from our politicians that this somehow results in massive cost reductions.

Yep that is exactly what we have seen in the 18 months that these shelters have been running.

The Russell Street facility cost $9.4m, which includes its conversion to a shelter and upcoming conversion into a supportive housing building, with upwards of $2 million in operating costs annually as a shelter, but that was at 70-some capacity. It has been operating at about half that so presumably less annual operating cost.
