It is not clear to me how Amalgamation of the CRD is going to fix the issue identified in Vernon?

We're halfway through the year 2019 and I'm still waiting for the very first appropriate/relevant comparison between Victoria and another place. The comparisons always have to be either way up to some exceptional world-class city (Paris, Tokyo, etc.) or way down to some irrelevant small city or town (Vernon, Prince George, etc.). You just never see comparisons to other Canadian or US cities of a few hundred thousand people.

Seriously, Victorians are talking about urban issues and street issues and amalgamation and somebody mentions Vernon. It's a non sequitur.

I think the intent was that this is happening in Vernon and elsewhere as well as Victoria, and Vernon has no one to amalgamate with so obviously that silver bullet won't work.

Is there any valid comparisons beyond Halifax?

Winnipeg, maybe?

Also Kelowna, though it was small when amalgamation occurred.

There are 14 Canadian metros in the same population range (a few hundred thousand people). So we can assume at least ~150 in the US. Some have been unified cities from the start, some amalgamated ages ago, some not so long ago, some are still struggling with amalgamation issues. There should be more than enough info available from that collection, is my point. No need for strained comparisons to Vernon or Europe or wherever else.

Odd, my go-to comparison is Surrey, which has app the same population as the CRD contained in one municipality.

Legitimate comparisons are Halifax, Oshawa, Windsor, Saskatoon, and Regina.

London, ON is almost the exact same pop. as the CRD (both are 383K), and has a history of annexing neighbouring municipalities in 1961 and 1993.

Annexing sounds cooler.

Screw amalgamation, let's annex some mofos!

Take that Oak Bay, you just got annexed! Esquimalt, you'r next!

Whatcha gonna do about it? Bring out your 3 Oak Bay PD officers with their teeny tiny itty bitty pop guns? Esquimalt - we already own your police force! Boom!

Sooke incorporated in 1999, and they review requests for annexation, not that they forcibly seek annexation opportunities.

Who gets to Annex who? Victoria is showing a lack of an ability to properly manage their affairs, so perhaps Oak Bay should annex Victoria. If it's population based, then Saanich should Annex Victoria, or Vancouver should annex the whole lot.
