so does that mean the airports have serious budget shortfalls with hardly any landing fees but still most support in place?

The number of Americans getting on airplanes has sunk to a level not seen in more than 60 years as people shelter in their homes to avoid catching or spreading the new coronavirus.

The Transportation Security Administration screened 94,931 people on Wednesday, a drop of 96% from a year ago and the second straight day under 100,000.

The VAA has a lot of non aviation revenue from airport tenants, like thriftys foods warehouse for one. But I can see a lot of projects must be coming to a halt. I haven't been out there for a while now, I can only assume the lower passenger hold room project has stopped. It was meant to be complete in the "Spring of 2020 "

Projects page on the website hasn't changed since January.

Most construction sites are still active. I don’t think they would stop the project unless regulated to do so.

YVR has put all their construction projects on hold indefinitely. International terminal expansion was scheduled to open in June. Other current projects on pause include the geothermal utility building, new parkade, and site prep work for the new Fedex facility.

Interesting. Why not finish the expansion? There’s hardly anyone hanging out at the airport.

Just 3 flights left tmr, I'm wondering at what point a airline closes a base at this rate, temporarily of course.

maybe the prospect of future revenue being there is too risky. what if it takes 10 years for leisure travel to rebound? what if some business travel never does?

Even before the pandemic, travel was declining.

What savings would there be? Labour is being covered by the feds and leases are in place.

Sure, but when you’re two months away from completion...

Has anyone seen any construction activity at the airport. couldnt see anything going on yesterday. VAA won't answer a email inquiry.

Lower Hold Room was due to be complete in April 2020 on the website. No updates have been posted by the authority.

I guess no big grand opening planned then.

this sounds like an awesome program trudeau has developed.  it helps bring back 6,400 fight attendants and agents then they lay off the 1,700 pilots.

Wage subsidy only pays up to a certain ceiling. Staff will be brought back for 3 months and then let go again once the subsidy ends. That way they get to extend EI as well.

Keep in mind, cabin crew are a different union than the pilots. CUPE (who represents the FAs) has a lot stronger national backing than the pilots. There's a different union that represents dispatchers as well, and then a whole whack of other staff (i.e. customer service agents, mechanics, etc.) that aren't unionized. All about negotiations here with unions. Much more going on behind closed doors to drive these decisions, no doubt. All of these decisions are very union-specific.

right.  also presumably the pilots are also mostly paid above what the maximum wage subsidy is intended for.
