Warm beer also hits you harder, doesn’t it?

In Spain they like drinking slightly off beer. It gets you pretty drunk pretty fast even at lower alcohol levels.

Every culture has its own beer style, way of drinking it and flavour preferences. Guinness here doesn’t even taste (warm or not) remoter similar to what it tastes like at the source.

Know it all.

Best of the City: Beers, buds, no boats – this is Whistle Buoy Brewing Co.

Following the local craft brewing trend, Whistle Buoy has made over 120 names for itself

Aug. 2, 2021

Before any sketches were made of the logo they’d commissioned, Isaiah Archer and Matt West-Patrick convinced two Edmonton graphic designers to travel 1,400 kilometres to do some ocean spearfishing near Bamfield.

The necessity of that diving trip wasn’t just for a story to recall years later. Archer and West-Patrick were introducing their logo designers to the genesis of their small, salient five-person enterprise.

“(Spearfishing) was the thing that sort of bonded us together,” West-Patrick said of he and his four friends turned business partners. Months earlier, the group dove off from rocks marked by what would give their business its name; the locally famous Bamfield Whistle Buoy.

Victoria’s Whistle Buoy Brewing Co. in Market Square is a brewery and taphouse the size of a conventional bar; the brainchild of West-Patrick as head brewer, Archer as head of marketing and Iwan Williams as the registered owner. The trio were joined later by accountant Nina Colovic and general manager Colin Curtis.

Andrew Duffy / Times Colonist

AUGUST 14, 2021

An application has been made for a new brewpub in the corner commercial space at 9835 Third St. in Sidney.

The Town of Sidney is offering residents two more days to weigh in on a proposed new brewpub near the town centre.

Residents will have until 4 p.m. on Monday to submit written comments on the proposal. There will be a special public participation opportunity on the issue at Monday’s council meeting at 6 p.m.

Small Gods Brewing has applied to the B.C. Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch for a new liquor licence for a pub to be established at 9835 Third St., on the ground floor of the Oceanna apartment complex.

In his submission to council, Small Gods founder Chris Bjerrisgaard said the company’s goal is “to aid in Sidney’s post-pandemic economic recovery by creating a business that will increase jobs, municipal revenue and the enjoyment of local residents,” but the $80,000 fee to offset parking would “increase start-up costs to the point of financial infeasibility.”

He said the pub intends to “offer living-wage compensation packages for all employees,” with hourly workers getting $16 per hour with the expectation they will make an additional $8 to $12 per hour in tips.

He won't get many takers at $16 an hour. Pot washers are on $21.

$8-12 an hour is terrible for server tips.

Do brewpubs even have servers? It’s usually a couple of people standing behind a bar.

Yah I don’t know the model here. $8-12 is good for counter tips. Spinnakers is a brewpub and has table service. Canoe, swans, etc.

Now those are restaurants that happen to have onsite brewing. But breweries with essentially tasting rooms on steroids can have one employee on staff during the day.

Small scale counter service for sandwiches and beer is what I have heard for format. Still seems low to me at $8-12. Sounds like maybe $120/ shift pay and tips after deductions.
Works out to net $2400/ month. Good luck with that.

Tough to make a buck with higher wages and low volume, that’s for sure, but what can you do. Gotta have staff!

Vancouver beer company taking over downtown Victoria space

Superflux {Cabana} looks to open on Broughton Street this fall, job postings going live soon

Aug. 17, 2021

Work is being done on a former restaurant space at 804 Broughton St., the future location of Superflux {Cabana}.

Superflux Beer Company is promising residents of Victoria a trip – even if it’s only a couple of blocks from home.

The East Vancouver-based brewery is renovating a vacated restaurant space at 804 Broughton St. in advance of its anticipated fall opening of Superflux {Cabana}. The venue will seat up to 115 guests and is self-described as a “Las Vegas Pool Bar Trip with Hunter S. Thompson.”

{Cabana} is being developed by Superflux founders Adam Henderson and Matt Kohlen, who opened their brewery in the heart of “Yeast Van” in 2020. The space is being redesigned in partnership with Studio Roslyn, who also created updated spaces for Superbaba and the Parsonage Cafe in Victoria.
