It was alumni night at the Keg on Quadra this week, a chance for former employees to wax nostalgic about the restaurant chain’s half century in Victoria.

As it turns out, plenty of well-known names have tied an apron at the Keg’s two local eateries.

Premier John Horgan was once a Keg waiter in Victoria. Jeff Mallett, the Mount Doug and UVic soccer player who went on to build Internet giant Yahoo and buy big chunks of the San Francisco Giants and Vancouver Whitecaps, started as a dishwasher.

Pamela Anderson worked at the Fort Street restaurant, first as a hostess, then as a server in its lounge. (“I used to wear prom dresses and sit behind the podium,” she once told the TC’s Michael D. Reid.) Keg lore says the waiters competed for Anderson’s attention, but she preferred to hang out with the cooks, leaving her signature among those on the wall of an old boiler room where chefs would retreat for a smoke. A few years later, she was arguably the best-known Canadian in the world.

...after closing on Saturday it was a big keg party for the employees.

Does that mean it was a big party at The Keg, or there was a big keg at the party or both?

They ate any food that was "left over" emptied all the "opened" wine bottles.

True that. Usually had no problem getting staff for Saturday nights.

The Jumbo in Hong Kong, which is a mammoth 5-story floating restaurant, had to close down due to lack of business during Covid.

They were going to tow it to mainland China for refurbishment and maintenance.

It sank while under tow.

It was such a popular HK spot for so many years, the thinking is someone scuttled it, so it wouldn't go to China.

I have had several great meals there.

I noticed that the Garcha Brothers meat market on Burnside will also be home to "Day to Day", an Indian produce and grocery store.

Excellent opportunity for taking over this turn key and well-equipped restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. Currently operated as an Asian Noodle House, being one of the locations of the popular local restaurant chain Noodle Fans (559 Fisgard St, Victoria, BC V8W 1R5), the restaurant has gained popularity among locals, students and tourists. Prime Location, reasonable rent, and great potential for high volume sales. Bring your own ideas or becoming a franchised restaurant of Noodle Fans, the possibilities are endless! Please do not approach the staff about the sale.

I get it, people are always looking for the next food niche. But that seems ridiculous.

The Papa John's pizza finally opened last week.

i stopped in this eve and they are crazy disorganized, the young lady at the front didnt know which order was what and kept double checking things, they probably had a half dozen pizzas ontop the oven (mistakes or wrong orders), they misplaced my order and had to redo it so a 15 min wait turned into over 30 min... i'd say the pizza is no better/no worse then a dominos pizza, but holy heck until they get their system and routine flow up and running it's chaos
