it’s worth a lot for them to try to get out for sure. who knows when movies will go back to normal. it’s not like there are not alternatives that almost every household can access.

Five movie theatres on Vancouver Island are getting back into business this week as rules regarding social distancing have made it possible for theatres to operate with reduced capacities of 50 people.

Sidney’s Star Cinema, SilverCity Victoria, Imax Victoria at the Royal B.C. Museum, and Capitol 6 on Yates Street will reopen on Friday, albeit with reduced showings and new cleaning and safety protocols.

Cineplex Inc. has filed a lawsuit against its former suitor Cineworld Group PLC, seeking damages over the U.K. company's failed acquisition that could exceed the $2.18 billion outstanding on the deal.

The Canadian movie theatre operator filed the suit in Ontario Superior Court on Friday, detailing what it claims was "a case of buyer's remorse" on the part of the U.K. company in the middle of a pandemic that's seen cinemas across the world unable to operate.

Cineworld walked away from the $2.8-billion deal on June 12, saying it had become aware of a material adverse effect and breaches by the Toronto-based company.

Cineworld offered to buy Cineplex at $34 per share, a 42 per cent premium on the chain's stock price at the time, but by March the company's shares had dropped below $10 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Cineplex closed at $8.50 per share on Friday.

On Tuesday, Cineplex said it reached a deal with its lenders to provide some financial relief due to the pandemic, but warned about its ability to "continue as a going concern."

Prepare to be amazed by the big screen once again.

Imax Victoria, located in the Royal BC Museum, will be reopening its doors to the public, resuming operations starting this Friday, July 3, after a three-and-a-half-month closure.

In the latest plan for Hollywood's hopeful return to movie-going during the pandemic, Warner Bros. will release Christopher Nolan's Tenet in an unprecedented fashion.

In Canada, Cineplex said the film will open Thursday, Aug. 27. Internationally, the film will open on Aug. 26, with a U.S. release in select cities to follow over Labour Day weekend.

Warner Bros. on Monday said Tenet will arrive at theatres first in more than 70 countries including Japan, Russia, much of Europe and Australia. The $200 million US thriller will open in the U.S. about a week later on Thursday, Sept. 3.

Hmm, I don't know what happened. When COVID first showed up, we saw a bunch of films go online for rent for about $20, and they were pretty successful – in particular Trolls: World Tour did very well.

Why the rush to get films back into theatres? Chains must be putting a lot of pressure on the industry.

I’m just enjoying that theatres are back open and showing second-run or classic movies for cheap. Odeon downtown is $3 on tuesdays and $5 other days, with extremely limited and well spaced seating. I saw Jaws last night!

some movies had just hit the theatre before the lockdown kicked in...  trolls being one of them, Disney's onward, so they had maybe a couple weeks (or even just a week) in the theatre,  a number of those went online pretty quick

some places just decided to release on their own platform like Artemis Fowl was meant to have a theatrical release, it was then released on Disney+ instead...

i imagine they are holding much of the big money blockbusters off for another year or two since they are dependent on those big box office hits to bring in the profits and pay to keep them going (I kinda like to call it the marvel machine...one blockbuster after the other and as long as they are raking in the profits from ticket sales it will just keep on going)
