A huge percentage of the teenagers at these parties are underage. They can't go to the pub; and if there is just one in a group of friends, then the whole group doesn't go.

There's also McRaes, Maude Hunters, 1550's, and Original Joes.

Even further away, right? Original Joe’s might be closest.

It’s somewhat odd for a university to have bars so far away.

In the interests of “harm reduction”, should the drinking age be lowered?

Old enough to vote, old enough to drink right? So where does that leave us 14?!

Half the reason teenagers drink is because they’re not allowed. And start at 19 because they’re allowed. Did it stop you

There's also McRaes, Maude Hunters, 1550's, and Original Joes.

Three of those four are not pubs, they're restaurants that try to look like pubs.  Maude's is the only true pub listed there.

Police and university officials say many of those involved are not students, or are students who don’t live in campus housing, and the gatherings are “unauthorized and unlawful.”

Karen Johnston, associate director of public affairs at UVic, said students found to be violating the university’s misconduct policy could be subject to a range of sanctions, including eviction from residences, making restitution for damaged property and limited or permanent suspensions from UVic.

Saanich police said officers assigned to UVic duties are concerned that the violence and “chaos” is escalating each weekend. “They fear that someone will get seriously hurt and that it is in the public’s interest that these unlawful gatherings no longer occur,” said police.

Are these gatherings actually unlawful? Not so sure. The actions of some participants are. But the gathering itself is probably not illegal.

Impaired driving and other road safety roadblocks are legal. General checkpoints to monitor legal citizen movements are not.

Why not just embed 4 cops in the gathering and arrest those in unlawful activity? Including being impaired or illegally in possession of liquor in public.

Is this sort of behaviour normal for an institution comprised of our best and brightest?

Odd, eh? Maybe it’s just random high school and early 20-something kids from the Gordon Head area. Or this is what first year looks like now?

But yes, these kids seem bored and unimaginative.

This is what poor leadership and where a focus on profits over an education will lead you. UVIC's reputation as Canada's "party school" is strengthened but those who expect their degree to actually be worth something after grad will be disappointed.

Is that UVIC's reputation? I always thought Western (UWO) wore that crown.

Fear and frustration hang over London, Ont., where many people are discussing four formal allegations of sexual violence reported to Western University and sharing unconfirmed rumours about wider sexual assaults. Members of the Western community say they feel unsafe, especially young women and other vulnerable groups.

i think it's Ryerson that has to change its name.

Ryerson University will officially be renamed, after the Board of Governors accepted all 22 recommendations from the Standing Strong (Mash Koh Wee Kah Pooh Win) Task Force.

“For as long as the university is named after Egerton Ryerson, our narrative will be centred on his legacy,” reads the Task Force’s report. “Given that our namesake is increasingly recognized as a symbol of colonialism, our identity as an institution can no longer be disentangled from separate schools, segregation, the genocide of Indigenous Peoples and cultural erasure.”
