Miniso is a cool Japanese-style store that's kind of a cross between a dollar store and a mini IKEA.

yes, if you like Muji you will find some similiar items a little cheaper. Watch out for the pens, they are priced at $2.99 for one, $2.99 for two or $2.99 for three. So make sure you buy multiples.

they sell these at muji for 7.50 and I got some at Miniso for 2.99 they are exactly the same.

Miniso is opening in Victoria. On their instagram story it said they are now hiring for their Miniso X Walmart location in Victoria...

Is MINISO Canada still under creditor protection?

I believe Miniso China (parent company) took over the Canadian stores following Miniso Canada's bankruptcy. There's quite the spat between the two organizations.

The last time I was at Walmart at Uptown a couple weeks ago, I asked an employee what was going in that space they built on the second floor at the top of the escalators. He said it was supposed to be a store of some kind, but that the deal had fallen through and now they were just using it as storage space.

^Based on the above, it sounds like Miniso is the mystery tenant of that space upstairs at Walmart. Zoomer first reported that in the Walmart thread back in July.

FYI Mike, Miniso is a Chinese company, not Japanese.

Miniso.ca's website states: "Established in Tokyo in 2013, MINISO is a global retailer specializing in high-quality, designer Lifestyle goods at a low-price. MINISO will continue expand around the world, with a goal of opening 6,000 stores by 2020."

The essence of the brand is Japanese.

The branding is meant to evoke Daiso, the Japanese dollar store giant. Miniso is Chinese, they don't have a single location in Japan. Their designer is Japanese, and they play up the Japan connection because it's seen as trendy and more trust-worthy.

That's kind of their shtick. A Chinese company headquartered in China selling Chinese products designed to look Japanese and be marketed in a Japanese style.

To call Miniso a Japanese company is equivalent to saying that Chipotle is a Mexican company.

If you want to call them Japanese, all the power to you. It's your site. Just trying to help with the whole "factually correct" element.

Yeah, but you have to look at this from a consumer's perspective. The branding says Japanese Designer Brand. Calling it a China-based Japanese-inspired designer brand in the title is confusing.

Sony is Japanese but their electronics are made in China. Tim Hortons is a Canadian brand now owned by a Brazilian company. It's all good.

no. that doesn’t cut it. a company is where it started and/or is based.

Sony Tim Hortons comparisons don’t equate.

Daiso and Muji most of their stuff is made in China these days.

Either way they have some good stuff, some fun partnerships. I was a big fan of their moomin collection.

here is an interesting read about Miniso

Miniso, which has a presence in over 70 countries, is on an expansion spree. The Japanese designer and lifestyle brand, known for its quality products within an affordable price range, has forged an empire of over 2,600 stores worldwide through self-owned stores and franchises. It plans to open 800 stores in India by 2020. Launched in 2013, the brand philosophy of ‘simplicity, nature and good quality’, has seen a growth rate of 80-100 stores per year. To achieve these goals, MINISO has received multiple investments through a series of funding, with the recent one in October 2018 by Tencent Holdings of USD 147 million in Series A funding.

In an interaction, MINISO’s Co-founder and Chief Designer Miyake Junya shares the brand’s philosophy, vision and expansion plans.

What was the inspiration behind MINISO?

MINISO was founded by me and young Chinese entrepreneur Ye Guofu at the end of 2013. At that time, major financial markets such as Japan, Europe and the US were in economic downturn. Consumers generally wanted to buy products with good quality but low price, and aesthetic pursuit was more inclined to minimalism. In order to meet the new consumer demand and fill the gap in the market, MINISO was born.

How did you meet Ye Guofu?

We met in 2013 through a friend’s introduction. At that time, Ye was doing market research in Japan, Europe and the US, etc, and needed business opportunities for his second venture. We got to know each other and hit it off immediately. Ye has a deep understanding of the retail market and strong execution ability. We have complementary advantages in many aspects and cooperate smoothly. That’s how MINISO exists.
